    1.6, excellent fuel consumption!!

My partner drove to Sydney in her Mk4 GL last weekend. (boooo!)
She filled up on the wednesday before and drove to work thursday and friday, about 80kms all up.
Left here on saturday and drove the 290kms to the boat. On sunday she topped up the fuel in Victoria, $30 and drove through to Goulbourn. topped it up with $50 there and continued on to Sydney. The gauge showed 3/4 tank when she got there so it looks like it cost around $110 all up with her Golf loaded to the roof. Cant get much better than that over 1200 kms in a petrol Golf eh??
    Cheers, Andrew

If I assume fuel was an average of $1.10/Litre that makes it 100L for 1,200km or about 8.3L/100km.

For reference my VR6 averaged about 8.5L/100km on my DOVW trip from Sydney to Melbourne (including my cruising round the joint while I was there). Admittedly I didn't have a full load, just some bags, car parts, cleaning gear (plus my XL manly body )

Interesting how close the VR6 can get to a 1.6L really

Fuel price down here is $1.24pl, she was putting in BP ultimate on the mainland.
When she got to Sydney she still had 3/4 of a tank!! Thats 1/4 of a tank from Goulbourn wherever that is.
When she came down here in her Commodore we stopped 6 times between Sydney and Melbourne to refill. That was loaded up too.

As a motoring show stated recently, it's all about how you use your left foot. I.e. M3 vs toyota prius, M3 won.

Admittedly some cars are inherently going to use more fuel than others... 12 cylinders to four !!

I can get my bora pretty close to 9.0 Litres cruising around the back roads in the burbs but I have to be soooo careful

    Anyway thats good work !

Well that makes it more like 7.4L/100km, which sounds much much better!

7.4 is something the VR just isn't going to do

As for M3 vs Prius, that was proving, underlining and highlighting it's about how you drive rather than what you drive. Yes some cars are always going to use more fuel, but a significant factor is how you drive rather than what you drive. Having said that, the work Prius is averaging 6.xL/100km rather than the 4.4L quoted, I'd rather buy a polo diesel for less money, longer life, better resale and most likely the same level of consumption.

6 times between Melbourne and Sydney ?? You're taking the pi$$, right?

That's an average of 150kms PER TANK. You must have been towing a billboard mounted sideways on the trailer with the handbrake on as well......

I know there's hate for commodores everywhere, but I have never known one to be that thirsty, especially when there's a mechanic in the car

Ha ha Gerhard!! Not taking it mate, I am not joking!!! It had one of those horrible black injected motors and was tuned correctly as far as I know but I am a VW mechanic!! When she worked here she drove the thing 44kms total each day to her work and back, $10 per day thanks!!! Plugs were grey as too!!
I cheered when she sold it for $2000 with the personally signed by Brock in marker pen and cleared over front guards.
She loves that Golf and wouldnt go back to a commode ever again.Cheers!!
