    What I had in mind was somthing like this;
    polished alloy intake with a pod filter and heat shroud
    a cam that will basically "drop in" hopefully a 270 with new lifters (dont want to pull the head off for new valve springs ect.)
    2" mandrel bent exhaust with true equal length extractors a high flow cat and some sports mufflers of some kind..
    and get the ecu tuned to match the mods

    I was thinking that would give a fair performance gain over stock and make the car a bit more exciting to drive aswell as creating a nice exhaust note!

    I know you don't want to hear it but you really are heading down the wrong street. I was young once and did exactly the same but with far older cars.

    You'll get much the same increase in performance, from leaving the spare at home and taking out the back seats.

    There's no way to re-invent this wheel. Going to America is probably pointless, I am 99% sure they got no engines under 2 litres, so there will be no performance parts there.

    I might be wrong but I don't see the 1.8T clutch fitting.

    There also won't be too many folk that can tune the ECU for sensible money either.

    Save the money and spend it in the Beetles.

    I'll bite here since no-one has really been helpful !

    The engine base itself is vastly different from the 1.8/2.0/1.8T thats also offered in the MK4 Golf . It is loosely based more upon the smaller capacity 1.1 - 1.6 litre engines . Its biggest advantage is that the actual block itself is alloy and that makes it about 20kg lighter than the cast iron equivalent . To get more power from this engine you'll have to spend some serious money and rebuilding it is probably the only decent way . The head is cross-flow and it runs cast iron headers so you can upgrade the exhaust manifold to extractors and that will help , dont quote me but I think a set of mk4 2.0 ones might fit . Then flow the head , 268 Schrick cam , bore out the engine + 0.5mm (be careful here as the bores are coated in Alu-seal) and get a lightweight 1.8t flywheel . Also while you are at it convert the gearbox to a 1.8t/2.0 type with shifter cables instead of linkages . I have done this to 1 car , but it did cost around $5k so wasnt a cheap exercise but it can be done !
