It would take a few people to slap money on the table, rather than expresions of interest to approach a workshop and get sevs approval.

The Corrados from Japan are mostly LHD.

A lot of the parts will need type approval which will cost many thousands.

It's not going to happen until somebody rings Canberra and finds out. I know that many fruitless hours have been spent on the phone previously. Nobody here knows what the situation is at this time! Everybody is just guessing. I am giving you historical facts.

Right, I spoke to Matt today, who has just moved to Sydney from the UK and brought his Corrado with him.

When it came int the country, it needed child restraint bolts for compliance and that was it, tax was paid on it having a value of $10k and then it was blueslipped.

When he went to the RTA there was no entry on their computer for Corrado. BUT there is now. He had to get the car weighed and measured, and the stats entered, so it exists in the RTA computer, as a make and model registered in NSW.

The next one should be easier, cheers Matt.

All you need to do is get one here and the hard work is done. No need for sevs approval, as its a personal import.

The other interesting loophole is that according to the import rules, you can import any car that you have owned for a year, or that is purchased for export to Australia. If you had a good reciept showing what you paid for it, the sellers details and that the car is purchased for export to Oz, that should be sufficient for customs.

As the corrado would be less that 15 years old, duty would have to be paid on it, but customs either get someone in Oz to value it, in Matts case at $10k, or they make you pay duty based on the price you paid for it in the UK, preferrable.

If I had the $$ id be doing it, but I reckon its very feasible. Wouldn`t bother with a LHD one though as there are so many expensive parts you need for the conversion.

That's what a personal import is.

"or that is purchased for export to Australia."

What does this exactly mean??? I could send $$ to anywhere in the world and buy something stating that it's "purchased for export to Australia" and does this make it OK?? I would love to believe that this is so 'cos I would go out an get a job off-farm to earn the money to buy a Corrado (+ turbo diesel engine, of course).

Thats about importing a car into QLD. Hmm

    Some reading for you.

This lets you work out the tax you have to pay.

This says you cannot import anything unless you have owned it for 12 months or it is more than 15 years old. However, I have read in a customs form about the purchase for export rule. Also it only asks if the vehicle is 15 years old, no 1989 rule. we are in 2006, so 1991 cars should be allowed. Its an old form though.

I`m gonna ring tomorrow and ask for clarification.

The Personal Import requirements are normally that Australian permanent residency is required with only one car per person allowed which must have been owned and used in the UK for a minimum period of 12 months unless the vehicle is over 15 years old.

This seems to debunk the pre 1989 15 year rule. I`m so ringing Canberra tomorrow.
