What's the likelihood of finding a Corrado VR6 in Oz (NSW)?

the way i see it the car has already been approved. Its just up to someone to lay down the cash and expertise to start importing them. Well that and to prove they can be brought up to ADR standards. But then. i know nothing. only what ive read on the DOTARS and RAWS websites. which is awfully confusing to say the least!

I think that question refers even to the highest echelons!

Seriously, I did email and then 'phone the appropriate people as I wanted to bring in a parts car from the UK. (It belonged to a family member and had been written off.) The answer was an emphatic, "NO!" Front and rear cuts are OK, so if you can get someone to wield an angle grinder and cut the thing in half you can import the halves and weld them back together again As for "Specialist" vehicles like the Corrado, you definitely have to have an approved workshop over here that will carry out the required ADR mods...and there isn't one. (Golf Loon...could be a business opportunity for you here! )

So...what can we do?
* Get in touch with people that we know overseas and are coming to Oz. Give them the money to buy the car 1 year before they depart and (when we are allowed to) buy it from them here
* Go overseas and live/work there for a year and bring it home ourselves
* Get together and source enough of the model to bring them over and make it worthwhile for a workshop to register and do the ADR conversion
* Form a lobby group to get the law changed
* Give up and just be happy with what we have.

I looked into this a few years ago and there is no way that it could be economically viable.

They did it for Jap Cars, think of all the Nissan Silvias you see.

There is a big market for Silvias, economy of scale.
Silvias are much cheaper to buy in RHD.
Silvias are available with low klms.

Corrados would have to sell for over $20k to break even for actual costs.

Ebay.co.uk lists 16 corrados at the mo. Top price is about 3000quid, whilst 1000pounds gets you in the game. Say 2000 pounds to buy one, $5000 cost $2500 Freight and then Compliance and Duty. I cant see that being $12500 per unit syncro. I reckon they`d end up costing $15000 ready to go in Oz.

I think its madness to talk of buying LHD cars, as the cost of conversion is very high and you end up needing donor parts from a RHD country anyway. Japan, UK, Hong Kong would be my choice. What about South Africa? Anyone know if they have Corrados

$15k is still a bit of money for an early 90s car. Would anyone actually buy one, bearing in mind how tight most VW peolple are?
