also if you are looking at the engine from the front of the vehicle is cylinder #1 on the far left? Or the far right? Can’t find much online
My mechanic mate years ago told me number 1 is always the furthest from the flywheel ie gearbox.

Yes, even though these are back-to-back the by design, #1 is still furtherest from the flywheel.

Was watching a Yank car show yesterday & they swore when they found they'd reversed the fuel & return lines. Don't know if this could have application here.

Thanks for all the feed back guys,
Okay so we had the timing set up to fifth cylinder but now it is set up to #1 and it still won’t start.....

It is also throwing up different warning lights than last time, it is showing up flashing glow plugs, engine light and oil pressure light
Looked up online and saw that sometimes the flashing glow plug symbol can mean immobiliser
We are so lost anyone know of any security features or computer reset or does it need codes cleared first or fuel primed even though nothing to do with fuel was touched?
Putting a scanner on it today but losing hope.... going to tow it to a vw specialist soon... $$$😒

When cranking is the RPM needle moving? - if not then problem is the crankshaft position sensor / wiring.

Hopefully cranking it with the cam timing wrong hasn’t damaged/bent any valves.

I doubt it's an immobilizer problem as that would not have been affected by just an engine repair . I know this from when I did an engine transplant on my sons van , turned out after we changed the engine wiring harnes and all the other stuff it would not start . As it transpired because we had swapped the computer thingy the cars immobillzer would no longer read the original keys that were coded for the old engine , simple fix by getting the keys code duplicated to the new keys and it fired up .
