Smile Who best to insure campervans?

    Hi guys,

No doubt there are many VW Transporter owners who frequent this site with vehicles that have had full production camper van conversions e.g. Trakka (like mine), Sunliner, Kea, Frontline, Discoverer etc.

Just wondering if owners of such vehicles might give me some recommendations as to best companies to use for comprehensive insurance?

My previous vehicle was satisfactorily insured with Coles Insurance, but they haven't got a clue when it comes to production camper vans. My 2003 Trakka is worth $30k or more, yet Coles line was "We can only insure it as a T4 van, highest value we can go to is $8,400."

Suncorp gave me a similar response, although they could go to $14,900 max.

Give me a break! People are paying between $70k and up to $150k for new versions of these things. You can't tell me that they (and the financiers) are then going to be content to insure them as a new Transporter only, with a maximum value of say $40-$50k!

Over to you fellow T3 - T5 campervanners for (hopefully) some good tips. Who do you use please and your approximate premiums for what amount of cover?

Many thanks for any advice you can offer.

    cheers,

    Dubswin.

I had no problem insuring my Frontline T5 campervan with NRMA - am travelling at the moment so can't check the policy but am sure that they listed it as a Motorhome, insured value about $65,000 for about $800. Can provide exact details in about a week if you are interested. I am on 65% no claim and multiple policy discounts etc which might make a difference.

My 2003 Trakka is worth $30k or more,
We also own a Trakka,'01 model that I have insured for an agreed value of $30,000 through Apia. There is also contents insurance covered
with a $100 excess. I have increased my excess to $500 to reduce my premium. In May I paid $462. The policy is called Motorhome rather than Campervan. You may have to be a certain age to insure with them.
Understand how it works, troubleshoot logically BEFORE replacing parts.

We also use NRMA and have an agreed value policy. Our Certificate of Insurance shows the insured vehicle as a Volkswagen Transporter Mcara (which I guess stands for motorhome/caravan). From memory though we couldn't take out the policy online but instead had to ring to get the campervan classification.

Gold Coaster has jogged my memory - my NRMA policy has the same VW Transporter Mcara designation and is an agreed value policy.

Thanks so much to my respondents for their most helpful information, which will save me around $500 I reckon - you can always rely on the VWW crew!

    Best regards, Dubswin.
