I see a number of Nissan and Toyota luxury people mover grey imports on the roads in Melbourne, but I struggle with the external styling. Looking on Carsales, there are some big prices for these almost new vehicles. And I have a wheel chair hoist in rear of the T5, so we need something that has enough head room etc. The KIA is well packaged proposition but requires significant floor mods to accommodate a wheel chair. Cheers, Scott

I must say, the new Renault range is big on carrying capacity but seems a bit low on power.
    Very competitive on price though.

The same 8sp ZF costs $4,500 extra when buying an Iveco Daily. I love that transmission in my Amarok, probably only the auto I'd axcept, but still prefer a manual gearbox.

Just a side note here. I don't recall that the Runners in the Transporter and Crafter range, designed for the fleet owners would in the past ever had an auto or DSG as an option.

Around town no issue but load up a trailer and with a load in the van as well and the Trafic's 103kW/340Nm is not enough, I agree completely.

My Transit Custom's 96kW/385Nm is a bit better obviously (125kW/405Nm option not offfered here in the Custom but is standard engine in NZ???) however the VW's 150kW/450Nm is perfect as long as you buy what VW Australia can be bothered offering.

I remember trying to spec up a manual Tdi 340 Crewvan to closely match the manual only Trafic Crew Lifestyle I bought and when I added metallic paint, 17" alloy wheels, barn doors, rear cargo bulkhead with vapour seal, sliding windows in both sliding doors, auto sense wipers, satnav, fog lights (the Lifestyle pack) ... it ended up being nearly $10K more....and I couldn't get heated seats or keyless entry & Keyless engine start in the VW which again is part of the Lifestyle pack.

Completely agree on the 8 Speed auto Amarok..my 2nd loan vehicle from old Burwins and my 1st speeding ticket ...I'm also wondering with the announcement of Ford and VW in discussions about future commercial vehicle developments if the 8, 9 and 10 speed torque converter autos co-developed by Ford and GM will find there way into VW's down the track.

And regarding Runners, only ever been manual offerings.

...I hope not and that they'll stick with the ZF.

Well after looking at some videos on the ZF it looks like a better tranny than the abomination DSG . VW seem to have stumbled from one overtech tranny to another in the last decade or so . The Tiptronic was a mistake that even VW themselves new about but would never admit , I am sure that the reason for the DSG was because of the mistakes in the Tiptronic ie 'sealed for life "internal oil filter . Then the DSG services every 60000 and where is the filter this time ? yes outside the box makes you wonder , plus the dreaded roundabout pant soiling delay in gear selection .

The 6sp DSG in passenger cars and 7sp in commercial applications (DQ500) are superior to any GM, Ford or even Japanese torque converter automatics in terms of performance, reliability and longevity. There was never ever an automatic transmission not even in Ford, Holden or Chrysler that you could say was better or more reliable.

The 6sp tiptronic in your T5 you had was, Aisin transmission made by Toyota. Many Japanese cars with the same tranny suffered the same fate, despite they had a servicing interval (from my memory 80,000km). In Taragos, in the best case they started to misbehave before 150,000km and I didn’t know anyone who would get to 200,000km without the repair.

The 8spZF is probably the most reliable auto transmission out there right now and guess what in Amaroks it’s filled for life. I remember the the MB 5sp. autos already in early 2000 had first oil change after 9years, so you can’t blame only manufacturers for that your car has not as long life as you want, the environmentalist, greenies are there to blame for it too and I’d say they’re solely responsible. The manufacturers always wanted to protect their products.
