Hi Guys, First post. I have a 2006 lwb T5 Crewvan 1.9 TDI. Can I use a WDH towing my camper/caravan which has a ball weight of 100kg? hanks, Rob
Hi RobJohns,
The Transporters have a max tow ball weight allowance of 100kg. In Europe they have tight laws on tow ball weights and most European caravans are designed around this. If your caravan/camper is relatively light weight, the tow ball weight may be no more than 100kg, so should be fine without a WDH. Just make sure you pack your caravan evenly and don't load up your draw bars with heavy items such as gas bottles or bikes etc. The most important thing IMO is to have your caravan level, therefore you may need riser bars for your tow ball. Hope this helps.
I use a WDH for my camper on mine. The main advantage is keeping the car level and ensuring you can get good drive with the front wheels. Only use a light one (Sheperds Crook) type.
As WanbyMc mentioned I make sure I pack the camper evenly not exceed the ball weight. I measure my ball weight with kitchen scales before I go on a trip and take photos on my phone so I can remember how to repack it.
From what I remember reading a long time ago a WDH does not decrease or increase your ball load.

You are correct the ballweight is always just that no matter how tight you pull a WDH.
It does however lighten the weight on the rear by distributing some to the front wheels and the trailer wheels.
The ball weight is still the same as its actually weighed when DISCONNECTED from the tow vehicle.
Have had endless discussions on this when vanning as I had a van with a 300KG ballweight and an all up weight of 3 tonne
With a unitized body it doesn't pay to have too heavy a one as it can cause body distortion.
