Faulty thermostat or temp sensor even
I'm experiencing similar things in my polo at the moment..
I had a new waterpump fitted in my 2006 2.5 transporter less than 3 years ago, less than 30,000km.
Has anyone had one fail so quickly??
I had a slight loss of coolant (as in a few capfuls) Did a pressure test and nothing.
Driving on the freeway towing a light boat I had a temperature warning signal and the temperature gauge had shot up.
Pulled over, fans were going flat out but engine didn't feel too hot. Added around 500ml of coolant and had another go, Gauge immediately went up so I pulled over and waited for a truck
After a couple of short test runs the temperature rises only when under load and drops very quickly.
No signs of coolant loss, oil level ok, engine does feel hot.
I was thinking the water pump, is this possible within 30000km?
Any help or suggestions would be greatly appreciate.

Thanks Luke, I have both of these on my list. and was going to replace the sensor first.
Another thing I've notice which may be a completely different issue is with the Air Con. Van feels warm as if the AirCon isn't working properly and is creating a lot of condensation under the van and even some in the passenger footwell.
Thanks BR
Check the oil in the engine they will leak into the internals and mix with the oil .
Would i have to drop the oil to do this? no gunk around the filler cap and no oil in the water.

Take the water out and check the impeller.

Finally removed my water pump after seeing it had been leaking at the drain plug.
Pump is shagged and shaft is snapped…
Any tips for cleaning things up to make a good seal for the new pump?

Wow, that's the second w.pump shaft in the T5 5 cyl TDI that's snapped shaft.
I hope you won't be fitting the genuine pump or the one from the euro parts suppliers. Good aftermarket brand like Dyco, also GMB pumps made in Japan are much better option.

I have KS replacement pump which looks worrying similar to the one that has failed…
I know it's been said before but if you have a slight drop in coolant check your pump!
