Try use good engine flush before changing engine oil. Also, the good quality fuel additive used at every fill up doesn’t add up too much to fuel bill and goes a long way in increasing the engine reliability.

I've used water injection on petrol engines as far back as the 80s. (it was very good on agricultural Ford & Holden engines).

I've also done regular carbon cleans on my TSI Skoda with a water/turps/metho/degreaser mix. I generally fed 2L into a hot engine running at 3000rpm every service. It helps a bit but isn't a miracle cure.

I think if you are suffering from gummed up oil rings you are better off changing the oil more often and try and find out what oil has the highest detergent content. Also avoid short trips (walk, ride bike).

I use LiquiMoly Engine Detox as an engine flush in the dirtiest engines, Penrite Engine Oil Flush is good too. Penrite makes an excellent DPF Cleaner, it’s a bit more expensive than equivalent LM product, but it’s very effective. Good to carry in the vehicle with you in emergency when you DPF light comes on, 1 bottle is for 30L of diesel, can be used every 5,000km as preventative maintenance.

Does that mean that with my 80 litre tank, I should use the best part of three bottles?

It depends, you might have less than 1/2 tank when the DPF light comes on or if you use it as prevention just wait until you have less than 1/2 the tank. Alternatively you can use LM DPF Anti-clog it's good for 70L of diesel.

Thanks Brad, bought van couple months ago with oil consumption issue already present, i don’t do many short trips at all but having said that low revs on long trips not doing these engines much good either I don’t think, I’m in the habit of driving in 6 gear now on the open road, as for walking can you recommend a good fat burning product I did water injection yesterday, 5L over 30min at 2500rpm, after about 3l big white smoke guess dpf getting steam cleaned.

Thanks T, I’ll try Detox, I’ve never had a car with such smelly engine oil, do you have best practice recommendation for flush ! I service every 10000km but also burning 2L1000km. Are VW filters better then parts shops ?
