yeah so after having my car for a few days, at first he couldnt get it to make the noise so i went in there showed them the noise, he said it might be a engine mount but he wanted to check it on the hoist, yeah checked it on the hoist today and said it was the spline, but told me you need to replace to parts, the axle shaft which he said is $520 and stub shaft/spline which is $608 plus 170 to fit. what you reckon? shop around for some better prices or thats ok? he said they were a aftermarket parts they go through?

The spline was not $608 mine was around $445 plus gst trade retail $493 plus gst ,the internal spline in the drive shaft was not affected even though the stub spline was badly worn so forget the axle shaft for the time being . $170 is reasonable but for the time spent its a bit over the top , I am not a mechanic but I am handy with tools it only took around 40 minutes maximum to do it myself . Jack up the van remove wheel remove lower control arm bolts undo axle nut undo two support bracket bolts and pull the axle out then undo the allen key inside the spline , its not that hard to do if you are doing it yourself PM me and I can talk you through it .Or if you are not in a hurry you can get one from the UK for a hell of a lot less but not sure about quality .link here VW transporter t5 stub spline | eBay
Okay I will acknowledge that the mechanic has the right to charge a reasonable mark up on his trade price purchase and I would acknowledge that in SOME circumstances the drive shaft could be worn but I would suggest that you shop around in case there are other places with different pricing the labor cost is also reasonable allowing for workshop costs etc and time taken

no worries going to try pull it part myself, im in no rush as i have another car to drive so i might order something from uk, the guy said he definatly thinks you should change both spline and shaft at the same time so i dunno? and that comment above is pretty much the steps u go through to take it off yeah?

Yes the description I gave is the way to go , as for the shaft/axle I would still hold off until you pull it apart it can't hurt to leave the old part in place because as I said mine was perfect even though the spline was buggered . Which guy told you about the axle needing to be done at the same time ?

the mechanic guy that looked at it. ive got the 2 control arm bolts off, i think they were the right ones, the 2 21mm ones closer to the motor? but now i need a socket for the axle shaft bolt, the biggest i got is 32mm and was to small. what size is it?
-
The two bolts are in the metal bracket which holds the axle in place half way along , the one at the end of the shaft is a big one cannot remember what size , also you will need to remove the lower control arm bolts as well that way you will be able to swing the whole disc rotor and brake caliper etc outwards to clear the end of the axle these are at the very bottom of where the lower control arm joins onto the rotor . Loosen the big nut off in the center of the rotor and use a block of wood to drive the axle back out of the disc it will pop out quite easily . I wish now I had taken some pictures for reference .

yeahh i just need to get a socket for the axle nut, the biggest socket i got is 32 and that was to small

one gettin the axle out of the disc and unbolt the 2 support brackets how does the shaft come out from there??
