    VW T5 2009 Auto not engaging drive

    Hey all,

    I've an 09 T5 with a KFG auto gear box that has recently developed an issue when engaging drive or reverse. Basically it won't engage gears after sitting over a period of time, particularly overnight or sitting onsite for a few hours. It feels like the van is in neutral and will take a good minute or two to engage. The ATF has been serviced every 45k km's..

    Has anyone had this issue before? I'd like to get some ideas before taking it into the mechanics to diagnose as I need the van for work and can't afford the down time.

    and filter each time?
    how many K's on the box?
    can you get any OBD codes read?

    no ideas from me, just interested

    Like Rebuild said have they changed the filter if its like the Tiptronic in the T5 series you have to remove sump pan to change it and the dealers will not do that . Ours was almost completely blocked but still drove when first started it was just when you pulled up at the lights then there would be no drive as the pump sucks fluid up from the sump and if the filter is blocked it will not get enough to create drive via the clutches etc only a thought .Hope you get a resolution soon , one more question when you put it into gear what happens when you rev the engine ?

    Yes, Filter and sump gasket were changed at the same time.
    Just over 200,000 km's on the engine and gearbox.

    I've just pulled a P0721.

    17105 - Transmission Output Speed Sensor (G195)
    P0721 - 008 - Implausible Signal - Intermittent
    Freeze Frame:
    Fault Status: 00101000
    Fault Priority: 2
    Fault Frequency: 4
    Reset counter: 39
    Mileage: 206579 km
    Time Indication: 0

    Would it be safe to assume I need a new transmission output speed sensor.. Would anyone know where I'd be able to find the part number for a KFG auto - speed sensor?

    When I put it into gear, it feels like the car is in neutral and will roll with the slope.
    I haven't been giving it too much revs incase it does damage but it takes about a minute or two to engage.

    VW would be the obvious place to start with for the sensor. But that doesn't confirm it to be the fault. Not sure if you can but you should try looking at live data in the box to see that the sensor is there and working. If you can catch it bad at the same time as the van doesn't move. That would be good. Could be a wiring fault in the box too of course.

    I have a problem on the TIP in our A4 wagen. a clip had broken and a cap and O ring blown out of the valve body. When you selected reverse, you rev'd the engine and after a couple of seconds the pressure built up and it hammered off backwards. All forward gears were good.

    I found part of the clip stuck to a magnet in the sump. Not too long to work out where from. Cost to fix it was fresh oil and a filter. A gearbox fella gave me the O ring and I made a new clip.

    I've got a quote from VW, $312 for the sensor. They didn't want to provide me with the part number, so I thought I'd look online for one. But if I'm going to pay $300+ for the sensor, I'd rather send it to an experienced mechanic to determine the exact problem. I'll get it checked out by a vw auto specialist and see how it goes.

    IMO, no.
    The sensor has only detected differences between expected and actual values.
    It doesn't mean the sensor is necessarily faulty.
    Get it checked by a mechanic or trans specialist

    Check the wiring harness on the front side of the transmission. There sould be a connector plug there, it's just about the sump. Unplug it, and see if oil runs out.

    I agree it would seem pretty remote that a sensor would cause that sort of problem , a sensor would detect a problem but not shut the drive down . I could only guess it sounds like a pressure problem I wonder if that model has a torque converter .Many years ago after a gearbox was removed and then refitted the dog connection was not aligned properly the end result was when you pulled up at lights it would just be in neutral and when you put your foot down it would thump as it engaged drive .
