    Ok, I've got a plan.
2010 5.1 is leaking oil due to engine damage from EGR. Engine still runs well but comes up with fault codes / limp mode etc.
First step - prevent further damage
----> gut the DPF, blank the EGR, remap ECU and maybe a performance tune for a bit of power.
Second step - oil change maybe with a thicker oil to prevent excessive oil loss.
Third step - maybe can live with oil loss as long as engine still ok. If engine gets worse then I'd need a new engine but would not need DPF or EGR replaced as these would have already been dealt with.
Booked to have it done next Friday.

I spoke to a German mechanic the other day he specializes in VW AUdi BMW Mercs only , I broached him about EGR blanking DPF etc . He was very knowledgeable about possible problems that may occur down the track after around 20 to 30thou km after the mods are done . Apparently the EGR and its cooler is designed to keep the engine operating temp in a very defined range , without the EGR that will change and over time can lead to piston failure .

I would have thought it would run cooler, which is a good thing for Australian climate. And s free flowing exhaust can only be a good thing as well.
Given the engine I've got already has cylinder wear, and the DPF might not be in great shape neither, so I don't there's a lot to lose.

You can only work with that is in front of you, its worth a shot.

I had a older tractor and it needed new rings, but of course they were as rare as unicorn ****, and i wasn't able to source them anywhere

so i just used a heavier oil and it did the job.

    Update:
Van has been getting worse last 2 weeks. DPF light coming on all the time, and going into limp mode quite a bit. Have been able to clear fault codes while driving using the VCDS, which is good for taking off from lights, going uphill etc.
    But still bloody annoying.
Rather than a new engine have decided to gut DPF and blank EGR.
Just picked up the van from having this done. I also opted for a REMAP as well - why not - the engine needs replacing according to VW.

WOW - the van is punchy lively and has more power than when it was new! Am stoked.

Next step is to flush the oil out, along with the ferrous / silicon / crap from the corroded EGR.

Will change to a thicker oil - liquimoly 10W40 - which might reduce some of the oil consumption (was 1litre per 1000).

Will see how this existing motor goes - might still last some time.

awesome, hope you get more km out of the engine.

New oil will help, but interesting to see if does reduce the oil consumption.

would running a engine flush agent in the existing oil, help before new oil?

It was $1300 quoted. But negotiated a bit less.
Includes: Gutting of DPF, blanking EGR, software deleting, Remap/ tune.

Given VW quoted over 17 K for new engine / DPF / sundries I reckon it's a no- brainer.

Local mechanic is going to sell me 20Litres oil, filter, and stuff to put in old oil before change. Apparently u let it idle for 10 mins with this stuff in, and then drain.

Sounds like a great plan, that should help clear out the crap in the current oil.

All up, its a risk worth taking, considering the cost of a new engine... i still can't get my head around $17k
