My wife was driving the T4 today, driving along happily on straight road at 60kph and suddenly engine stops working and re lights come on on the dash.
Car was running on lpg - but no problem there. It would not restart, coil was not wet - dry day and the car had been running as it usually did.
Towed it home and now have to problem solve. It spins freely.
So check in order:
Spark
Pull a plug and smell for fuel - if no fuel then relay or pump? (but then when it failed it was on lpg)
what else?

Relay , common problem in the T4 there is one in the fuse box area . it fails with no warning you may find after a while it may start again and go for weeks days etc with no problem and then it goes again .Ok looked back over some of my posts about this problem . relay no 30 is the one it supplies power to the ECU .$25 part . Hope it helps .

Is there a hall sensor in the dizzy?

Not sure which motor you have but it will have a hall sensor Usually these are an intermttant fail
Best to first try and establish whether you are losing fuel and or spark

Try another coil in it.
Wet or not, they'll still die.

Been too busy to look at it, but coil has got wet in the past and mucked around. Was first thought.

Finally got a chance to put a spanner to the car. Pulled the relay 30 and checked the terminal - no issue. Had fuel pump operating and fuel pressure so relay seemed OK. Bought a new coil off ebay for $45 and replaced coil - all good, running well. Coild removed looked to be original as marked '96 and will audi brand. Would normally check spark etc, but with fuel pressure (there is a gauge plumbed in next to the rail) and a healthy relay 30 the coil seemed the obvious choice.

Glad to hear its solved did you open up the relay or just check the mounting pins , even if they look okay the fault could still be there as the contacts inside get carbon build up as I stated mine would be fine for months and then stop sometimes it would do it a few days apart and then not again for weeks or more . The dealers could not find the problem with mine even after two checks , it wasn't until I pleaded with them that it was going to get me killed if it stopped in the middle of an intersection . Someone at the dealers in spare parts heard my plea and said Relay 30 he explained it was a common problem $25 later and it never happened again .

Did not take relay apart.
Tried to start it with relay as is - no start
checked terminals and tried to start - no start
checked old coil - no start
replaced coil - started first go.
So no relay involvement, but will get a spare relay 30 for the parts box under the back seat.

Good idea to have one in case I suppose but your diagnosis looks spot on with a successful result .
