I had a new filter and 4 lts of Penrite SIN ATF added to the box last week. Oil that came out was black and the magnets in the bottom of the sump were covered in fine metal particles.
I plan on doing it once a year. Hopefully it helps.

I don't think running the engine to pump all oil out is a good idea.$$$
I used Penrite DX-VI in '08 as it was recommended by Penrite tech at the time.

I'm sure that VW factory manual says just drain and refill.
Just make sure you seal the filling plug well and always use a new O-ring.
