    Thought it was the end

Today I had to drive from south of Brisbane to Gympie to do a sunroof install for a dealer ,as the remnants of Cyclone Debbie are now drifting south I ran into some horrendous rain . At one point the van seemed a bit down on power and was lumpy on acceleration , when I got into Gympie it was almost running on three cylinders {petrol powered 2.0 T5 } While working on the job I pondered what was wrong as I was too busy to have a look or get it checked , during the day it dawned on me what had happened . I have a sports air cleaner and during the rain I passed a couple of trucks who were causing huge splashes over the van , seems the poor old girl was drinking some water mixed with fuel . By the time I went to travel home it was fine again , memo to self to make up a shield of sorts to prevent similar from happening again hmm maybe a snorkel !

The old 'sports' filter has that problem on every car!

I suppose its better than the old days of the Morris 1100 and Minis , where a dog would cock his leg against the cars and they would sputter to a stop. But that was more the distributor problem .

Hi Sunny43.5, did you fit a snorkel, and if so, who stocks/makes them? I have a T5 2.5l diesel flat tray and about to do a few creek crossings and am wondering if I need to fit one. Thanks, Philip

Hi Philip to answer your question no , I never gave it another thought after afew days . Like I said the coincidence of those trucks putting up all that water was probably a one off occurence which may never happen again . With creek crossings I would imagine there are a few things to be wary of with water of some depth , naturally air intake would be critical but the standard one would be more waterproof than mine was as I had removed the whole airbox . This left the filter almost completly exposed , I suppose if you are going to spend some time actually in water then a snorkel would be the best idea . If it was short term the standard might work , I would be also aware that there are lots of other components that may not like being submerged starter motor /altanator / and a few other things as well .

My Cooper S had a plastic guard over the electrics which seemed to do a good job.
