Sunny I noticed no battery cover on my 12 highline multivan, also the one cost saving that I dislike most is the cover inside the back door, my 08 was leather covered where’s the 12 is only plastic ( unless mine was replaced by previous owner)

Not yet. I was hoping to get my next service done there but my change of lease company has made servicing much more of a PITA so I will probably have to visit the dealer just to get this issue looked at.
I've a 2012 T5.1 - campervan.
The plastic "shield" on the RHS ripped off years ago (driving through shallow water, from memory) and I made a replacement with checker-plate aluminium. Kept the neighbours awake for hours with the hammering. I was irritated to have to do it as the original was just pussy! I didn't even THINK to approach VW under warranty.
Not long afterward, the LHS "shield" folded under when driving on wet roads and partly tore. I couldn't believe it. What a dreadful piece of work. I managed to repair and reinstall it. Yesterday, for no apparent reason it folded under again, was damaged and needs replacing. It's a bit complex in shape to make a replacement I think.
I have tried everywhere to find a part number - can't find a number on the item itself. My VW parts dealer doesn't seem to know what the part is - suggested it's the under-engine shield!
Does anyone have a Part Number please?? What's its NAME?
Thanks folks.

Another example of VW,s failure to test in real world conditions like we have in Australia , I could give you lots of examples of parts failure due to our climate and VW,s lack of understanding different countries climate.
Our climate is not considered a wet climate compared with other countries like the UK where they sell lots of T5.1 & T6s.
Understand how it works, troubleshoot logically BEFORE replacing parts.

Try telling that to those here in Qld and the northern part where yearly flooding rains would easily exceed what most of Europe would get and add in the fact at lot of our roads are substandard in comparison to most of Europe , drainage from roads creek crossings and loads of other factors would make driving through low level waters a common occurence .
Yes you are right Jets but lets not take away the fact that VW have made many blunders in relation to not recognising local conditions. Dont start me on the infamous Tiptronic n the early T5 and how easy it was for the fuild to burn due to our climate , once its lost its viscosity thats when you lose your auto .
When I bought my first T4 [approx. 03] that was an auto., I read all the faults by VW on not recommending changing the oil & filter &
overheating trans. that owners are still re-engineering to make them last. Ref. Eurovans over on the Vortex forum.
What is disappointing is that the T5 seems to be exactly the same after over a decade of bad experiences with T4/ Eurovan.

Isn’t the T5’s 6sp tiptronic automatic transmission (Toyota baby) out our production for over 10year?
More on topic now. I service quite a few T5s and also owned T5 4motion for 11 years and was very happy with it, the best van ever.
Now, let’s not spoil the others T5 and T6 owners experience and don’t give the bad impression about quality.
To make that clear there is no more 6speed auto in the T6 and in the T5 from 2010 model year at least.
To all others who broken underbody plastic protectors.
The Volkswagen commercial vehicles have their own faults just like any other brand.
Though the plastic undershields are the best out there, here are the pictures of underfloor from the 2012 model driven by tradie electrician for 117,000km. They’re all intact and in perfect conditions. No flimsy plastic, but even the strong plastic can be broken if one drive in extreme situations. In which case you can’t blame it on manufacturer.
It all looks very solid under the T5 and I believe the T6 as well. Here are some pictures and I will post some from the T6 later on.
Please, don’t hesitate to post pictures of your broken underbody parts and for clarity pictures of the underbody floor as well.

The only issue we ever had with under body protection on our early T5 was lack of protection of the diesel fuel cooler , again bad planning by VW for local conditions as on ours it was the ONLY place that wasn,t protected and was directly behind the passengers front wheel . That same wheel is first one to go off road during normal driving and as happened in our case a rock got thrown up directly into the cooler with resultant fuel spewing out onto the road , when we stopped at the next set of lights at night mind you we took off and found ourselves in the middle of the intersection facing the oppositte way as it had coated the road with diesel and we all know how slippery that stuff can be against rubber . Then on our nice new T5.1 VW decided to be as tight as a fishes ahole and didn,t even fit an under engine cover that all our previos three Transporters had as standard .
