T6 Dashcam Power Options

I've installed a dashcam in our T6 Multivan but the lighter socket doesn't function on accessories only and stays powered after key removal for quite some time.

I will probably take it to an auto electrician, but for anyone more handy than me (or for the info of the auto electrician I go to) is there an "accessories on" circuit that the power for the camera can be sourced from so that it shuts down when the keys are removed from the ignition barrel?

I've managed to run the power cable for now inside the roof lining, then through the join where the A pillar meets the roof, down inside the passenger door seal, under the glove box, up inside the glove box lid close to the dash then between the dash and the gear selector console. It pops out for the 12V socket inside the drop down cover next to the gear selector.

Yes get a meter and test the fuses and then buy the correct addafuse and power off that.

You can buy a spare ciggy socket at Jaycar and just plug your original plug into it.

Dont know what make camera is so could be 5volt and stepdown is in the plug so if you dont know for sure dont cut the end off

I thought most dash Cameras were able to be programmed to run for a set amount of time after ignition is switched off , in that case a constant power fused point would be best to plug an add a fuse into , thats how ours worked in the past . But now with our new multi media head unit the dash cam is part of the system so you can view the video live on the 7 inch screen or take out the SD card for use on PC . Yes as Hillbilly says be careful not to cut off the end as some of them are only 5v so you can buy a USB converter to wire into the fuse point .

Most need a thing like a Power Magic which has a voltage cutout in it and shuts it off before the battery drops to below start level.. None that I have used do it on their own.

No Hillbilly I think you misread what I meant , "if" connected to a "constant" power source the camera itself cuts itself off after a set time . That way there would not be a drain after that time , there are some that go into in a stand by mode so if the car is hit while parked the camera starts up on its own again for a set time only . Some even have built in battery to power the unit when the ignition is off .

No I didnt I dont know of any that do that If you do please post the names. My BV only have enough stored power to shut the last file down correctly if the power goes off. The 6 I have used all need power to work and the PM for parking mode or a Cellink battery pack which is charged as you go by the car and the camera is only wired to it

The cameras go into parking mode after 10 mins of the car not moving IF THEY ARE POWERED. The wiring is of a Power Magic is One to always on, earth, one to acc only. The unit keeps the power on till voltage drops to whatever its set to then shuts camera down.

If my cameras were connected to always on , yes they would go into park mode but still consume power and therefore would be just like leaving a radio on with the same result

Most decent cameras today DONT use a battery they have a capacitor which withstands heat much better as the older ones I have had a Lipo battery which in one case swelled up. I replaced it and the tiny button battery for the memory.

Oh yeah it's a USB plug into the camera so I'll probably need to retain the harness plug. That would be why they charge decent coin for a "hard wire harness" for them.

Or do what I did buy a male cigarette lighter plug from Supa Cheap plug in the camera socket tape it up and then just run the red wire to power and the other to earth . Or one of these will do the same DC Converter Module 12V To 5V 3A 15W USB Output Power Adapter | eBay

Is always best to keep it original just in case you want ot swap it into a different vehicle.
