T5 VW Extended Warranty - Vans & Multivans

Bad news if you have a T5 Van - the RRP for extended warranty has recently increased from $2,400 to $3,600. This translates to a "street price" of $2,250 to $2,400. I just wish I had purchased it for my van a month ago when I first started looking at it

Good news if you have a T5 Multivan - the RRP for extended warranty is still $2,400 ("street price" $1,400 and up). I'm guessing that when Allianz realize that a Multivan is basically a T5 van with a whole lot of extra stuff that could go wrong they will increase the RRP for Multivans to $3,600 as well.

So, if you have a T5 multivan that you intend to keep past the original 3 yr new VW warranty period, I suggest you look at buying the extended warranty sooner rather than later.

A new aircon, turbo, water pump, DMF, auto gearbox can easily cost more than the total premium for a Multivan, and these are items that are known to have issues on some T5 vans.

As usual, Jaz Hokin at Southern Classic Cars (Wollongong) is the person to talk to if you want to buy the official "VW" extended warranty (see post #18 on page 2 of this Golf Mk V VW extended new car warranty thread for more info).

    Hi Greg,

I got mine through Burwins just last month (Call Eric 03 9724 8230) for $1400.
He mentioned a price increase I'd just missed out on, but I didn't think it was nearly that much, more like a couple of hundred $. He might be worth a call.
My initial warranty still has 5 months to go, so I'm glad I got in early. It's a rare win for me if your figures are correct.

PS. What does this say about the reliability record of T5's?

I did talk with Eric (in fact I bought extended VW warranty for my Skoda from him), then he put me onto John (who looks after VW commercials for Burwin). John wanted $2,400 for extended warranty for my van

These costs don't say much complimentary about T5s at all - I think they are category 5, which is the most expensive category (read most expensive warranty claims) that Allianz has.

I'm there on Monday for my 75,000km service and it was Eric that organised my finance while obviously John and Bob are at Burwin's Van service so I'll take my bargaining weapon with me (aka: wife.) Ps. Thanks for the warning. $2400 for an extended warranty vs buying a new van....I think from memory my change over price still required some money from me to meet the payout back in DEC '09 while by the end of my 3 year ownership (June '10) it should be closer to $1500-$2000, now if this is less than paying for an extended warranty I would rather buy a new van.

If you don't mind me asking: How the hell does that work ? (trading a 3 year old van in on a new-un for such little change-over money), or is that only the up-front payment and you continue to make regular payments for the new-un ?

Being a private individual with no opportunities for getting tax benefits on my vehicles I only ever pay the full price at the time of purchase, that way I know exactly what I am paying and when.

If you buy in June that will most likely be a FL T5, presumably with the Bi-turbo 2.0 ?

Sorry I definately wasn't clear when I typed that and shouldn't have used the phrase change-over. My current van is on a chattel mortgage (this allows full gst claim back in the same period of delivery for businesses) and I set it up so that I have zero final payment. At the time of quoting my outstanding finance still required more then the initial trade-in value. I didn't get final figures from the dealer because they had no fixed pricing or specs. When I do buy I will aim for an AWD Bi-turbo DSG and then I'll meet my accountant and he might set me straight, lol. I should add I was enquiring well before the finance ends.

    Thumbs up

I just came across this thread in the nick of time! Thanks gregozedobe

I'll be giving my new local service centre a call first thing tomorrow morning. If they cannot match Jaz, my business will go to Southern (I have bought a car previously from them).

Let you know how I go tomorrow.

    Cheers, MM

    Unhappy

Well grim news $2309 for extended warranty on the Beach.

At this price I'll be giving it a miss and placing my trust in VW engineering and reliability...

BTW Jaz was very friendly and forthright.

You are braver than me - I purchased some (expensive) peace of mind.

I guess warranty insurance is a bit like sick leave, in that it is nice to have it, but it's better if you don't need to use it.

The quote I received from Burwins was slightly less, so sadly this now seems about the average for T5's. I might discus with the dealer any potential for a discount on a group buy and get back. I also might enquire about a one year term as this would carry me to July 2011.
