New tires fitted and I have gone with Kumho KU27's. They tell me that this is a new tire and is ideal for use on the van with greatly improved longevity.
Lets hope it is true.
Last set of Hankooks around 40.000 no rotation .

my T5 came with Dunlop Sport 01, alos in 17" with a 103 load. After 32000km they're almost done. My tyre man suggested Continental's at $280 each. I'm looking for a cheaper alternative for a heavily laden van, for work. Any suggestions? how are those Maxxis & kuhmos now?
On my third set of Maxxis MA P1 235/55/17 103
70,000 ks out of the first two lots each, this set look like doing the same

Posted in your other thread before I saw this, Zaskar
I'm halfway through my third set of Maxxis MA P1 235/55/17 103
This lot look like going to 70,000 ks same as the previous two sets
I pay around $220 a tyre
There're quiet, handle/corner/stop brilliantly
Fitted to a Multivan with some gear in, so around 2.5 tonne

I still have the original "Dunlop SP SPORT 01 235/55R17 103W" on my Multivan, but they are wearing very quickly.
I then plan to fit "Sport Maxx RT" (in 235/55R17 103Y XL) because this is a new gen tyre and is what on new MarkVII Golf and new A3.
I am thinking some of the positive dynamics of the new Golf could be due to this tyre and I am curious to see if the Multivan will drive better on them.

Like everyone else I have been frustrated at the lack of 17" tyres for the T5.2.The 103 load rating knocks out a lot of possibilities. The original Michelins chopped out big time on gravel and have been using Goodyear Cargo Vectors (215/60R17c 109T) - as tough as, but noisy and hard ride - 30k on some really bad roads, about 50% wear and not a cut, chipped lug and puncture, but always looking for something else.
Talking to my tyre man today and he suggested Federal Cougia S/U - 225/60R17, 105H XL rated. A bit more load capacity and a 6mm lift compared to 235/55 , still legal as OD increase at 12mm is under the 15mm max for NSW, plus a stronger side wall being XL rated. He said that they are not aslong wearing as the Maxxis or Vectors tyres, only 8mm tread depth compared to 10mm on the Vectors, but reckons that they are a good tyre and have been developed in conjunction with Bridgestone, but made in China. At present they have a directional tread pattern but the tread pattern is going to be changed "some time soon". He quoted $190 for the Federals, $250 for Maxxis MAP-1 and $230 for the Cargo Vecors
These tyres appear to tick most of the boxes for my needs - Campervan carrying about 2800kg - if they are any good. Would be interested to hear of anyone's experience with Federal tyres.

The OE tyres - Dunlop SP Sport 01 (280 A A) and Michelin Primacy HP (240 A A), both in 235/55 R17 103W XL fitments - are passenger car tyres primarily designed for the European market (mostly smooth roads). Whilst not in the category of high performance tyres, they have a reasonable balance of handling, grip, low noise and ride comfort.
So accordingly, resistance to wear and road hazards, durability on poor road surfaces, frequent heavy loads and commercial usage would not have featured highly on their design brief.
I wouldn't have thought fitting 17" wheels with passenger tyres on a commercial vehicle was an inspired decision (or practical one) by VW, but there we are.
The Kumho Ecsta LX KU27 (600 A A) is a passenger car tyre that's been on the market for at least five years now, but given the high treadwear rating, it may offer the sort of mileage you're after, despite having a speed symbol of W.
The Dunlop Sport Maxx RT (240 AA A) is a max performance tyre and Dunlop's flagship passenger road tyre (which will slowly replace the former flagship SP SportMaxx GT and also the SP SportMaxx TT) with a very high emphasis on handling, road-holding and grip.
I have done 5000 on the Khumo KU27 now. So far so good. They have reasonable grip and seem to wearing quite well. Still too early to tell really.
I actually just put a set on my wifes Outback but that was because I got them at a bargain price of $120 a tire (215/60/16) compared to the $260 I paid for the 17's on the van. This special price did not include fitting so lets call it $142 a tire. Still a great price.
I bought these online at Buy Tyres Online | Cheap Car Tyres | Brisbane, Gold Coast, Melbourne, Sydney - International Tyre Trader , with a pick up at Seven Hills. So pretty happy so far.
I am about to take the van on a 1200k country trip with a trailer and dirt roads so will be interesting to see how the tires fair.
