Great thread, helped immensely with narrowing down 17 inch tyre options.

I ended up going with the Maxxis at $225 each. Prices vary widely between different retailers. One shop who only sold the amazingly expensive Michelins and some other expensive options directed me towards the retailer who import Maxxis and then to one specific outlet who did end up being the best price wise.

My original Michelins lasted nearly 50,000km before an unrepairable but luckly slow leaking puncture finished one off. I think I could have got another 10,000km or probably more out of them otherwise.

Having a 4motion I thought it best to replace all 4 at the same time and keep the best 2 Michelins under the house just in case I’m lucky enough to get another puncture later down the track.

    Cheers

Have just been through the process for my T5 Multivan 132kw DSG 4Motion, so perhaps an update is in order. I do about 50% road and 50% gravel so wear is an issue. The 132 Kw has big brakes so only a 17" rim fits. The DSG means that a larger rolling circumference will void warantee so we are stuck with the 235/55/17 profile. Placard lists 215/60/17 for "winter" tyres. The limiting issue is the 103 load rating. This allows a total vehicle weight of 3.5 Tonnes which is needed for a fully loaded T5 4Motion and knocks out most of the locally available tyres.

Is there any technical reason not to use a slightly taller tyre ( 235/60/17 Geolander) on a DSG T5 4motion. There about 4% larger circumference???

It will change the gearing ratio, and also put the Speedo out as well.

It will not change the gear ratio. The gear ratio would changed, if you would've replaced the diff with the different one, with the different number of teeth in gear and pinion. The speedo will be more or less accurate with the different size of tyres, it depends...

Its hard to get a straight word from insurance companies on whether its legal or not....
Generally they dont like tyres that are much wider and lower profile.
As long as the weight rating is ok, and the tyres are not more that one "step" away from the recommended then it should be fine...

Would be worth contacting your insurer and checking I suppose...

I cant remember whether I did or not...

PS - makes the speedo more accurate (if anything actual speed 0.5-1.0 km/hr lower than read-out)

Would the 235/60/17" have an adverse effect on the DSG 4motion gearbox??

yeah I'm keen to find out, as I'd like to fit Pirelli ATR 235/65 -17in tyres to my van when I get it...I did notice that whilst trakka use these tires on one of the ORP vehicles, they state its a manual trans without a DSG option...

does anyone have any concrete knowledge either from VW or otherwise that this would not be allowed...?

The speed woud be 7% fater and you would have to correct it somehow to be legal. Trakka modified vans aren't just bigger tyres slapped on.

What about 18" less or more tyres available?
