I posted this earlier but got no replies. The noise is still there but goes away when the vehicle is raised off the ground. Has anyone experienced this?
My van has developed a dry scraping noise when the steering wheel is turned from dead centre to full lock left and back to dead centre. There is no noise when it is turned to the right. Does anyone know what could be causing this. Westy.

You should post more details of your van, like what year and how many kms and describe the noise when is it happening, like after it warms up a bit or as soon as you start driving, what speeds, in cold or hot weather or both and any details that may help with diagnosing.

We have a similar noise in our recently purchased T5 2007 (113k), our mechanic has checked it out and altho I cant remember exactly what he said....maybe a spring and dirt were mentioned ( I am a girl afterall), I do remember he said it was not serious at all and would not affect the car or performance. He may tend to it in future or if it worsens. Not sure if this helps?
I had the same issue in my 2009 t5 it made a terrible noise turning both ways.
It was strut top bearings on the power steering it was fixed under warranty.
They were a bit surprised it was still a problem with my build year as they thought the factory had sorted the problem
Hi all, The strut top bearing is in the alloy piece that holds the top of the spring - it can get dirt worked into it as the earlier T5s did not have any seals I don't know about the newer ones. When road grime stops the bearing swivelling with ease from left to right ect, then noise can occur, added to this the top threaded part of the shock (chromed rod) is fastened though the top plate with two locking nuts-they can come loose allowing a knocking noise. Inspection is by removing covers (for left side eg,)behind the battery and lifting the large rubber grommet/cover revealing the top of the shock tower - the two nuts can be examined, I hope this can help - when I re-greased mine I fitted a large O ring to prevent dirt getting in.
