Got the drive shaft and stub out.
Just having breakfast and I'll put the new ones in.
Will post pics tonight.
I think the issue with the clunk is the drive shafts , mine had the same symptoms after 200000 kays but it had been like it for a while once changed noise and clunk gone . I said at the time that like the good old days in rear wheel drive cars like my old Valiant V8 you would tend to hang the rear end out and more likely was the drivers side , I recon that the tendency to push hard into Rh corners would explain why that side got worn before the other . I did notice that the spline joint was dry so it would suggest metal against metal with no lube would accelerate wear . The DSG may behave differently on power distribution so it may not be as prevalent . Oh mine was a 2.0 petrol manual .

Mine was as dry as a dead dingo's donga!
Used about half a 50gram tube on all the splines on both pieces were overflowing full.
edit - Oh...........I just came back from a test drive and warm the oil up for an oil change...............
What a relief not to have to drive very, very carefully.

Strange my old ones did not have the secondary groove that yours have , but looks like you were pretty close to having it shear off . I wonder if those were originals or not in the first place .
As I said, I've had it since new bet one let go under warranty.
Clearly, they just replaced the stub and shoved the old shaft back on...........probably with no lube!
What I also noticed is the lack of O ring on the one that came out and the new one I put in.
Did they do away with it?............or should a pull it out soon and put one on and regrease it?

So what you are saying is the one in the photo was a factory replacement part , I wonder why it is different to the spare parts you buy from the dealer . Maybe they used a non genuine one when yours failed , yes I would put lubricant on the shaft maybe VW could supply some of their grease they use in the clutch throw out bearing as they describe it as ""Sealed for Life grease " LOL
