    T5 TDI 2.5L auto fluid change Q's

G'day, new here, based in Adelaide, with a 2004 2.5L TDI LWB 6spd auto van, bought secondhand with 55K on the clock. Now up to 75K'ish.Out of warranty.

Been browsing through here for a while, and require some auto gearbox info if possible.
I originally posted about the gearbox here
    http://www.brick-yard.co.uk/forum/fo...TID=23244&PN=1

Want to do an auto fluid and filter change.I've got a VW manual coming and I think I will go with Penrite DX-VI semi synthetic fluid. Is this a good choice? Is there better?

Don't have a VAG thingy to get fluid temps for the change, but should otherwise be good to go once the manual arrives.

Also, are these gearboxes ZF or AisinWarner?According to my VW manual it is coded HCE.I can't see any code plate when i look under the vehicle.

    Cheers,

Although not a T5, I have changed the trans fluid on my T4 auto. Have a read of this while waiting for your manual. The T4 procedure looks very close to the T5.

    BTW Welcome to the forum.

I want to change it around now, sealed for life seems like BS to me.Most on other forums seem to change theirs around 50,000 miles or so(earlier model gearboxes admiittedly), and report much better shifting.

Thx, jets, i have seen that site previously.I have a reasonable idea how to proceed, just have not found anything specific to the later gearboxes.

The Penrite oil has VW compatibility, as does Mobil 3309 and VW oil at a stupid $51/litre is just not going to happen, unless i get a cast in stone "you MUST use our oil or your gearbox will blow"

jets, did you use the genuine VW fluid?

I've also had a little read here, concerning Mobil 3309

I agree, sealed for life is BS. I have helped a few people on UK sites that were experiencing trans. problems & an oil change has fixed the problem.
I spoke to the foreman at Solitaire[ at the time] & from memory they recommended an oil/filter magnet clean etc. at 60,000km.
The oil capacity in the T4 is around 5.3 litres. On an oil change you can only drain around 4 litres or less. Old oil remains in the torque converter & elswhere in galleries etc.
I spoke to a guy at Rowell & Searle, a respected & old established [1945]co. in Adelaide. He said he would NOT mix oils but you could use another brand if the trans had been completely dismantled & cleaned.eg after an overhaul.
I used VW oil for my van & paid $22.68/ litre +GST through someone who has a Capricorn account. An overhaul on a T4 trans could cost $6000 so I wasn't about to take any chances.I would say the 6 speed in yours would cost a lot more. The price you have been quoted for oil must have more Gold in it.
Just thought of something else. I used a funnel & long clear plastic hose to refill & it takes ages. I have since purchased a small pump called tom thumb from Autobarn for $20 which should be a lot quicker.

Rebuild you are 110% correct mate a load of BS. Sealed for life my cornhole! Ill send you some info on that oil change mate. Every oil has a shelf life as far as im concerned. Just done a ZF this weekend on a So called sealed for life that was flaring its head off. Renew and all good now. Sealed for life then how do you change the filter screen????? crap mate it was needing changed alright.
Another thing is that the oil coolers in the rad have a tendency to split later in life and how do you tell if it is leaking into the tranny if you dont check the oil condition??? Nevr be sealed for life as long as im servicing them. That goes for Porsche BMW , Audi and Vw all running so called Sealed for life ZF
