So I’ve drained the engine oil, probably the worst engine oil I’ve ever taken out of an engine, smelly black stuff, ran ten litres (cheap) clean oil through till clear out of sump, filled with 7 litres penrite, reset the km and hoping for the best, will post consumption.

Thus far it used 6 litres in 3000km ! Smelling the old oil I have to wonder I& it’s a failing egr or old oil or wrong spec oil, I’ll drive it steady at 110 over next 1000 km and see what happens.

I love the practicality of these vans but becoming more and more disillusioned by issues, seems all the cars I prefer have reliability issues, Disco, GL, VW vans.

My dad had two T2’s when I was a child, later a T3 2.1 Caravelle when I got my learners, when my own family came along I bought a 2.1 boxer and later a 2.6 5 cylinder, in Australia a 103 kw transporter Caravelle clone and then the last four years a 2.5, now the 2L, obviously devoted to these vans but if this one continues to use oil it’ll be my last one, sorry to say

This forum is great help, thanks to everyone who participates

When we picked up our new T5.1 in 2012 I was somewhat alarmed when he told me of their dealerships great "Pit Stop " service . I was told that anytime the engine oil needed topping up be tween services I could use the pit stop to get a quick refill , you have to wonder if they need that refill that they know those engines will use excessive oil . Yes I know according to most car makers that a cars engine will use oil during the run in period , and also that car makers build the engines with a built in tolerance so to reduce premature engine failure by people driving them to hard during the break in time . Sort of a run in already built into the engine .

It is. You may also try Moreys or Lucas oil stabilizer, which are very similar products.

All you previous vehicles you’ve mentioned had one thing in common, 6months 5,000-10,000km servicing interval and engine oil that its first job was to protect the engine, unlike today’s engine oils, which put the environment first.

Missus did 200km today, I had to get flash light to see oil level on dipstick as the oil remained absolutely clear and on level, i cannot help but wonder if my van had the right oil in or even if the oil was actually replaced at previous service.
I’ve spoken to Eurospec in Perth today and will have my EGR blocked off and remap done next time I’m in the city.

The writing is in the wall ! Done 700 km since oil change, never acellerated hard or exceeded 110, never the less oil is now halfway on dipstick. Got it booked in for an inspection next week in Perth, 800 km one way, got a 3 month warranty with the van, don’t no how much help that would be, but corresponded with car dealer in Sydney whom I bought the van from, and they aware of my finding and agreed to an assessment at VW service centre. I’ve never had to pack oil before when I travel to Perth ! Often travelled with the cruise control set at 140 for four hours straight, with previous 5cylinder without using a drop of oil, very disappointed,

What do the experts say, can engine last if I just keep adding oil or engine likely to deteriorate further if the issue is EGR/PDF related ?

Wow thats pretty scary for that amount of oil use , yes the old 5 pot was noisy because of the gear driven cam system . Even our 2012 is a bit more rattly than I would like but it seems to be a normal thing as my mates one does the same [even his is noisier than ours ]
