    T5 4motion question

Does anyone know if the 4motion system on the T5 can be disabled electronically leaving the vehicle front wheel drive only? I believe the system works by sending constant power to the rear diff that has a built in clutch pack controlled by a computer. If this signal was shut down somehow would the van become two wheel drive?

I used to own an all-wheel drive Nissan and by pulling a fuse it became rear wheel drive only - this made me wonder if the 4motion system could be disabled in a similar manner.

Talk to Solitaire. The T4 has a freewheel device that disconnects the rear diff whenever you are travelling forward. It locks up when there is a difference of speed between front & rear wheels. When reverse is selected it always engages 4wd. My guess is that the T5 4motion would be an evolution of the Syncro system, but as I said you should talk to Solitaire.
Understand how it works, troubleshoot logically BEFORE replacing parts.

You can disconnect the Haldex controller by unplugging it (on the rear differential).

Not recommended for long term as the tailshaft continued to spin & it can overheat the rear clutch packs.

We use it for short term (ie: dyno testing on 2WD dyno's).

I had a customer in yesterday who is fitted an LSD in the rear, he has actually been running without the rear diff or tailshaft installed for quite a long time!

    Thanks Guy H,

I might have to put my van on a dyno to test speedo accuracy and I was wondering if a 2wd dyno would do - that’s answered my question. Cheers.

Out of curiosity, what is the benefit of checking speedo accuracy on a dyno v checking with a GPS?

    Cheers

I want to put larger rims on my van but it seems the only way I can do that and keep it legal is to use a larger diameter tyre so the load ratings are maintained. I have spoken to wheelworx in Adelaide and they told me this can be done so long and the speedo is checked/recalibrated and they do this on a dyno.

Increasing overall wheel diameter even with a recalibrated speedo and correct load ratings may still be a illegal modification. Do your homework if you want to keep it legal.
