t5.1 radio - canbus or not? anyone installed aftermarket audio in an earlier T5?

Do i need canbus on an aftermarket radio for my 2008 T5 for illumination and stuff? i don't have controls on steering wheel but it would be nice to be able to hook up to OBD through the can bus on the radio for extra guages & stuff.. has anyone else done that?

are the original units easy to get out? any guides? do i need tools?

These are all from China try this company I have fitted many of them to a variety of VW's and they come with Can Bus adaptor standard . This is the one I have in both our early T5,s http://www.ebay.com.au/itm/ES8048AM-...item1c31f1e6b8

looks good. is it easy to get out the original radio?

have you ever tried to run OBD software on it?

I don't recall that being available on the early T5's but someone may enlighten you . Unless your van actually has those features already then I would say no . Fitting is easy the top cover above the radio just lifts up {use a plastic tool of some kind to save damaging the edges} there are two screws along the top edge remove these and you can then remove the front facia that surrounds the dials and blank switches etc , if your original is a single din then you can remove it and then remove the small holder below to allow for the new double din unit . Plugging in is easy they come with VW plugs . You may need a FAKRA adaptor depending on what aerial connection is on the original unit

Canbus was 06 on or so, wasn't it?

I installed an aftermarket single DIN to my 04, after the VW original decided not to play CD's anymore.
IIRC(been a while), I had to swap the hard +12V and the ignition +12V wires around.Don't quote me on this.
I think AerPro or similar make an adapter .

T5s had K-line, not CANbus as such. The later T5GP - different story.

The wires are easy to identify, as they're twisted around eachother within the loom. I'd personally avoid wiring them into the radio unit, unkless you want to disconnect the radio everytime you want to scan the van for fault codes.
