Yours must be a more upgrade model VW which the part seems different to the ones in our vans .

I recently though i might need a new blower motor, then found out the fan still worked perfectly but only on speed 4. Turned out i needed a new fan speed resistor, at the exorbitant price of $ an arm and a leg...

I replaced ours with an Ebay one and its still going strong nearly 8 years later .

That's promising! As you've been researching more broadly out of curiosity, it seems like the most probable causes could be a stuck relay or a faulty resistor.
