Hey sunny43.5, are the shafts on the dsg box troublesome aswell? Or just the manual box.
I just replaced the drivers side drive shaft with the updated version (posted in another thread)
Anyway, that was timely but didn't cure the other rattle that I thought was the thrust bearing.
Pretty sure it's the DMF now as it is really starting to make a racket and affect gear changes.
It's going to the panel beaters next week and probably straight to VW after that!
(not sure if I want to DIY on this one)

I just googled that and yes the clutches are bolted to a DMF , seems VW want owners to suffer even more these days with another expensive hit to the hip pocket when their smart ideas go belly up . Out of interest have you had the drive shafts checked ? Might be an idea to get a second opinion .Normally when the DMF is dodgy it is very hard to reverse up a hill , my DMF has been buggerd for over 10 years nearly . I only learnt about the mongrel DMF AFTER I changed the clutch plate etc so I was not prepared to pull the bloody gear box out a second time so I kept driving and driving and driving . So now with over 300000 km on the clock its still in there shuddering in reverse but some clever slipping of the clutch will get me out of any situation I may be silly enough to drive into

Excuse the poor dubbing to English.

Good explanation though of why they are used.

I'm going to ask them next week while it's getting it's arse fixed.
Been waiting since October for the wing doors to come from Germany.

Got a quote for clutch, bearing, flywheel and bolts etc........ $2483.20
She mumbled something about taking about 4 hours but wasn't sure and would have to check.
Haven't heard for two days...............................said labour charge was $176 an hour though.

If it's only four hours...........it sounds good to me!

When I did mine it took us around 8 hours , mind you we went in blind as a bat so it was a learning curve . At a workshop they would have the correct tools and lifting and jacking tools so that would make life easy $176 per hour OUCH that hurts , the poor sod doing the job is probably only getting $30 an hour so its a huge mark up at the dealer level .

$30 would be a tad generous.

Surprised they're only quoting 4 hours. I reckon it'll take a lot longer, but if that's all they're preparing to charge you, then great.

Agree Umai the price per hour to the tech I thought as a bit generous but I did not want to cheapen their experience , yes 4 hours seemed a short time as I know when I did mine we had to lift the engine in situ off the subframe then support the engine while we manoeuvred the gearbox out from under the van . I think from memory we even unbolted the subframe to get the mongrel clear enough to get the box out . I know I spent a fair bit of time on my back balancing the heavy gear box on my chest to get it out and then back in again , once the box was out changing the clutch kit was pretty easy new plates new throw out bearing but no DMF as I did not know about that little piece of VW sorcery until some days later . Best part is that I did that job around 4 or 5 years ago and the dodgy DMF is still working for forward motion [not so good in reverse ] ha ha .

Mind you, I still haven't heard back about that.
I think I'll call in and ask them direct.
I'm guessing they don't want it in writing!

Update on DMF replacement. Vehicle returned and all rattles are gone ! came in at $4000 which was $400 under quote so I'll have an ale on that. Cheers
