t5.1 biturbo Raised air intakes, provent 200 and openings on gearbox

In all most 150,000km in my T5 4mo manual, I’ve never had an issue with it. It’s a different gearbox in Amarok too.

My last 2011 Amarok had the same exposed ring gear hole. After a warranty repair on the clutch due to internal corrosion, VW applied their "fix". A plastic bung in the above mentioned hole, and removal of the 2 rubbr drain bungs.

I'm surprises you got warranty on a 'wearable' item!

It was just over a year old, and clearly the failure was caused by corrosion from water ingress and not misuse. There was a bulletin for the fix, but no recall.
