    t5.1 biturbo Raised air intakes, provent 200 and openings on gearbox

    Hoping someone can weigh in on this one. 2.5 questions. At some point I'd like to get a raised air intake on my t5.1 4motion highline, and prefer the hidden under bonnet look to an exposed snorkel, like one of these options:

    Relleumdesign Luftansaugung Höherlegung T5 T6, 215,00 €
    TERRANGER elevated engine air intake for increased wading depth, for V - GTV-VAN
    Relleumdesign Zyklonfilter Luftansaugung für T5, 796,00 €

    First question, would any of these (even the cyclone filter?) cause any concerns for nsw legalities?

    Second question, would you still be able to fit a provent 200 in the engine bay with one of these different air intake setups installed?

    Last question, on the topic of potential water crossings, I was changing the oil the other day when I noticed this 'hole' in the gearbox showing an exposed gear of some type. I wondered if this was normal, if my van was missing some sort of cover, and if not, how this gear might fair in a water crossing. Although some protection from the plastic engine tray, it still didn't seem ideal if you were traveling through a dusty environment for example.

    Sorry tried attaching photo of exposed gear without much luck...

    An exposed gear doesn't sound right...........but I don't know anything about 4 Motions.

    Im not to keen on those raised air intakes that bring it up to just under the window cowl, id imagine if you get a bow wave over the bonnet, it would fill the cowl entry.

    having said that, a t5/56 would most likely float in water that high

    The cog/gear you’re seeing through a hole might just be the ring gear on the flywheel. It may have a small cover that has come off.

    The Provent 200 has nothing to do to with water crossing but yes it should still fit somewhere in the engine bay.

    I agree with Bryn that a van is more likely to float away in depths above the middle of the door.
    I’d be more concerned with water ingress into the cabin and rear cargo area if you were going to try that deep of a river crossing.

    I’d also be more inclined to get the diff/gearbox breather kit just in case you got stuck in a lower, say wheel height depth crossing, as they won’t take long to ingest water and you wouldn’t even know until it’s too late.

    Thanks for replies. Does it look like a cover is missing?

    Yes also need the diff breather.

    On this style of raised intake, i also wondered about impact of bow wave (if you accidentally took on something that deep). Though assume torrential rain would have similar effect, so not sure how the water is managed with this design.

    That's the bell housing, I think.
    The gearbox and engine have seals to keep the oil in and the water out.

    Yes agree think that's the bell housing and maybe flywheel that i see? But still don't want that filling up with dust / river water?

    No harm done if water gets there, it will just drain out.

    My last 2011 Amarok had the same exposed ring gear hole. After a warranty repair on the clutch due to internal corrosion, VW applied their "fix". A plastic bung in the above mentioned hole, and removal of the 2 rubbr drain bungs.
