    T5 1.9 Tdi V 2.5 Tdi

I have looked through a lot of threads about this but wanted some opinions in the van model. I am looking at both models. It is not for work but mostly for camping and low cost travel interstate with my children. It will not be loaded up much just a bit of camping gear. my budget means I am looking at vans with 100-200 thousand klm on the clock. I would also commute to work 40klm round trip 4 days a week empty van, no hills.

How much more efficient is the 1.9 tdi than the 2.5tdi?
Is the 1.9tdi a bit gutless?
Is the 2.5tdi a bit of a worry mechanically?

I am open to both but would like to weigh the pros and cons of both.

    Thanks

The 2.5TDI is an absolute jet unlaiden. Get a late '06-onwards one in manual.

I've got a 1.9 myself. Even loaded up with close to a ton of gear and fit-out, it cruises along quite nicely on the freeway. They're a lot easier to work on than the 2.5, and a lot simpler by design.

Both have their share of problems, but if I wasn't so desperate to replace my last van, I'd have kept searching for a good 2.5. They were a bit thin on the ground in my price bracket 12 months ago.

Providing it's not the 96kw one

Look for one with a BPC engine code.

I don't have 1.9TDI, but I doubt that it will have better fuel economy than 2.5TDI.
Trouble less 2.5TDI will cost you less to run than 1.9TDI which needs timing belt replacement every 105,000km.

If you just need the T5 as a Transporter in the City or daily rides without any mountains or hills than I guess the 1.9 is ok. But as a "Family" Multivan with holiday trips etc I really prefer the 2.5. The most T5 owners who I know with 1.9 or 2.5 didnīt have problems within the first 250.000KM.
Re. fuel economy. :I found out that the 1.9 has only slight advantages maybe at the traffic in the city.

Everything breaks on the 2.5 t5 tdi r5 engines. Internal water pump that puts oil in the coolant and coolant in the oil when it fails. Power steer pump does the same thing. A/c compressors and alternators in the middle of the engine with spragg clutches and rubber dampeners. Cam shafts that wear and the crazy cog setup instead of a belt. They always sound loud and broken.

The engine was so good that vw made them for five year then quietly stopped. Awesome.

Yes they are powerful and fast. Then they are broken and costly.

1.9 tdi is reliable, easy to work on and conventional. Not as fast.

Obviously either will have to be manual. Don't even entertain an automatic in a t5. That's a different debate entirely.
