    T4TDI offered with Auto. & 4WD

VW Motoring June 1998.[a UK magazine] The TDI wasn't available until 2000 in Oz. Fuel consumption figures are particularly savage for the Syncro, something I can't agree with in my experience. In their sales brochure VW says that the Syncro uses approximately 0.5litres/100km more than the 2WD.

Makes it seem like they were offered with auto AND syncro....but they weren't. It was either auto or syncro.

As for the fuel economy......syncro most certainly uses more fuel (my numbers don't approach those often posted for conventional 2.5TDI T4's - how much the DOKA configuration contributes to that is open to question too).....though I suspect in my case that the penalty most occurs at speeds above 90km/h since my around town figures are quite good at 8L per 100 but on the open road blow out to 10-12L per 100.

It's interesting that the Syncro was available from the early nineties, the 2.5 TDI & the 01P trans that they are referring to here were both sold in mainland Europe in 1996. It took two more years to be released in the UK & four more for the TDI to be sold in Aust.
I understand the 2.4 [non TDI] was removed with the introduction of the 2.5TDI in Aust., while in the UK it was sold alongside with the newer engine.
The 2.5TDI engine dates back to early '91 when it was installed in the Audi 100 S4. In that body it was claimed to achieve 64 mpg at a constant 56 mph.
    Very impressive.
