    T4 what to look for

Change of plans business wise and need (meaning can only afford a cheaper van under $15k Like the T4/T5 but what do I need to be aware of in engine, transmission rust etc etc
Know very little about them just like em.

Need it to have auto and diesel, why? just like these options.

Auto box is something to watch out for - in combo with diesels the boxes (and the engine) are flogged by unsympathetic drivers trying to get acceleration.

High servicing costs for diesels - 2.5TDi ACV engine in the last T4s needs new belt & water pump every 60 - 80K. Otherwise oil & filter every 15K (needs very high spec oil - I pay $75 per 5 litres)

Air-con usually expires around 150K and is expensive to fix.

    Rust is rarely an issue.

If you want a reliable business van without the prospect of an 'ownership experience' then I suggest you look......more widely. If you like the quirks however.....

And just to balance things out a bit, I sold my T4 diesel last year with 360,000ks on the clock
And it ran absolutely faultless the entire time
It was only 79kw, so not a lot of go, but it was lugging around 700kg permanently and did so fairly well
Manual box, auto was just not me at the time

I did get some rust develop along the bottom edge of the windscreen, apparently not uncommon
VW had it repaired, with a new screen, under warranty

I still feel the best way to enjoy your vee dub better is to find a very good (and I'll emphasize VERY GOOD) private Volkswagen mechanic
If I had to rely on dealers, I wouldn't still be driving volksies

But the 2004 T4 diesel would have to be my second most reliable drive (current rexy leads that list, only cos it goes like stink!)

    This has now changed.
I have seen a T5 diesel 6sp auto for sale.
If it comes up to scratch after Jan Eveleens goes over it, he will install a bulkhead then we'll test it with a nice drive back to Adelaide.
