    T4 TDI owners

    Hi,

I currently own a 2.5 TDI 300 auto and am interested in hearing from owners of the 2.5L TDI auto vehicles. I have read a number of posts that say the autos are not very good. I can concur as I have recent had to replace mine and also installed a transmission cooler to try and help prolong its life.

Are these vehicles really that bad? Are there any good news stories about the auto box lasting?

If not I may ned to consider getting rid of it

    Cheers

MY old T4 had the tranny replaced.
I have heard that it is a case of 'when will the tranny need replacing' rather than 'will my tranny ever need replacing'.

Having said that, when they are working properly, they are great.

    Howie, give us your opinion.

There was a thread on the VW Vortex forum asking owners to post positive auto experiences. It seems to have gone now but there were a few pages of owners that had not had problems. The secrets to good reliability are to ignore VWs advice that they are sealed for life & no oil changes are needed.History has shown this to be rubbish.Regular oil & filter changes are essential to long life. The other killer is high temperatures of the oil & some owners have fitted temp. sensors to monitor things when in mountain country & high ambient temps. Almost all the members on that forum are Americans with all the autos. behind the V6 engine. A lot of them are also heavily loaded with some towing caravans & boats.

Hi and thanks for the feedback. I must say I am still nervous about the cars, you always seem to be putting your hand in your pocket to get it fixed. Perhaps its just a sign of the times. I suppose like many we love the practicality of the transporter but question the reliability. If only some one would make a van that did both, they would have a real winner

The fact that you have replaced the auto & installed an oil cooler to me means you can look forward to some good times ahead. You may have the occasional problem but generally they are a good long lasting vehicle. Come back to this forum if you have any issues or you want to know something, I am sure someone on here will be able to help.

Hi guys you can read my response to VW boxes on the other thread currently running but in a nut shell the T4 we bought new in 2000 the auto was very reliable even with the silly adaptive system which used to infuriate me like hell . That van was sold in 2004 the T4 had around 120.000 when sold to buy the now infamous T5 .The T5 only got to 60-70.000 kays before the auto started to rear its ugly head now at 130.000 its bad news . Now interesting at the same time in 2000 we had the T4 for family I had also bought a 1997 2.5 petrol manual T4 for my mobile business , up until the van was written off in 2005-6 it had done well over 280,000 kays and still had the same clutch manual gearbox etc . As was pointed out the T4 were miles ahead in my opinion with reliability and costs as opposed to the later stuff. Any one can read how as time has gone by technology has intervened in the driving experience DSG that tries to out think the driver with some dubious results for owners Turbo models with manifolds cracking gear boxes failing DMF failing I wont go on but it seems fairly clear what my opinion of technology in cars is and please don,t start me on CAN BUS .End of rant .
