    T4 starter motor question

About the problems with the starter motor, husband replaced the bush for the starter drive shaft. Still having problems, and when he looked at the flywheel through the hole where the starter goes in, he couldn't notice any discernable angled lead-in on the ring gear for the starter gear to engage. There is a lead-in on the starter gear. It seems strange that there is no lead-in on the ring gear. Does anybody know if there is supposed to be a lead-in on the ring gear? Can the ring gear be put in back to front? All he gets when he turns the key to start it is a whirring sound, so the starter is turning, but not engaging properly to turn the engine.
The vehicle is a 2002 5 cylinder diesel automatic transporter. Any help would be appreciated.

That sounds like you have the wrong starter motor to me. Some ring gears do have a lead some dont. But really sound like the wrong starter
