Hi mate, as far as i have seen the 2WD & 4wd Engines (T4 2.5 Petrol) - harmonic balancers are the same. I have a 95 LWB 2.5 petrol 2WD. Boris at Volkscare , Macquaire place Bayswater is good value with T4's.
Hi All, First post. I have recently purchased a 99 T4 2.5 Petrol LWB Syncro Manual Transporter, planning to convert to a camper over the next few months. I bought the van in Canberra and got it a major service before driving back down to Melbourne at a Volkswagen specialist, not official.
For the service the mechanics changed the timing belt, tensioner and water pump. Then noted: "Harmonic balancer is starting to split and perish. This part is not available from any aftermarket supplier and would have to be air freighted in if ordered from VW Dealers $1200 + labour to fit".
Having looked around online, T4 harmonic balancers seem to be a lot less than this, any thoughts?
Is the syncro one special?
Also recommendations for a good mechanic in Melbourne to work on the T4 would be appreciated?
Keen to get it up to scratch before trying some big adventures.
Thanks!

Understand how it works, troubleshoot logically BEFORE replacing parts.
