T4 owners ... how long do they last!

Just wondering from those that have or have had a T4, what has the average life span been under normal running conditions?

I bought ours about 5 years ago with 230,000 km and have used it as our everyday vehicle (with regular servicing) and it now has 335,000 km on it.

Just got back from a 3,500 km round trip from the Gold Coast to Broken Hill in 7 days and it hasn't missed a beat (with air con running all the way in up to a 40 degrees heatwave)!

Is this the norm for this model or am I just lucky?

I would suggest that yours is normal , I wish I had my T4 still but they don't run that well after the drivers front headlight front door skin and front wheel are torn back under the van by the rear end of a car transporter !! At the time mine had around 180000 km and was still running like clockwork [except for the mongrel relay problem they were prone to ] Many T4 owners will tell you they are a tough beast the 2.5 petrol was a real workhorse and in my opinion runs rings around the 2.0 petrol that VW then fitted to the first T5 which I bought with the insurance payout . But despite my rantings about the piddly 2.0 engine in mine I can happily report that it is going to tick over the 300000 km mark probably tomorrow ! If you are servicing as required then it should be fine for a long time yet , nice to hear it did the outback run under trying conditions .

Yes, fairly normal. There is a guy in Adelaide who owns a 2.5 petrol Syncro that he bought new, from memory in around '97. It's done, again from memory, just under 500,000km. Apart from service items the only major was a replacement clutch around just under 300,000km[from memory] Many years ago he looked at buying a new T5 but was advised to stay with what he has, a decision he has not regretted.
Many owners in the UK with mileages [yes in miles] up to 500'000.
BTW, Gold Coaster, what year, engine & trans. do you have?

There was a T4 2.5 petrol manual used by a drink vending machine company that reached 800,000km in 2005 (when I still worked at a dealer) . Ive heard of a few with 1million+ kms used as couriers . On a sidenote the t4 syncro used in Perisher did around 150,000km per season , last I heard it had over 600,000km .

It's a 1996 2.0L manual ... just did some calculations and we averaged 9.85L/100km which is pleasing considering the load that we were carrying.

My T4 is still going with 580K on the clock................petrol too!
Not sure how much longer she'll last though.

I refer to my earlier post #3. I was buying some more diesel fuel additive from him & he confirmed the 500,000km that his van had travelled. The clutch had been replaced @281,000km by himself because he couldn't find anyone in Adelaide, at the time, who had changed one on a Syncro. He puts the long trouble free life down to doing all servicing himself. He told me a number of stories that friends of his had experienced where they paid for services not performed.
I took the opportunity for a pic. His is the van on the left. Mine has only travelled 134,000km.
