Have you got your original ? if so just take it to one of the Mr Minit places and see if they have a similar one they can copy the code and transfer it to a new key . I did this with my son's T4 cost me $20 to copy the code .
I need a spare key for the T4 and got a quote of $260 today, which I thought a bit much...but is it? I can see how much they cost in the UK, but does anyone know how much they cost elsewhere?

Yes that's VW Stealers for you most of the Mr Minit places have what I would call a "code grabber" device the guy at our local just inserted the old key into the machine pressed a button then inserted the new key pressed another button and hey presto it worked . I was also told the time and price factor by local VW dealer as well , it was pure luck as I stopped at the shopping centre and asked the question at the Mr Minit shop .
I think it depends what year your T4 is. Sometime during 2001 there was a tightening of security of the keys throughout the VW range. When I needed a spare key for our 2001 Polo, that looks different to my T4 I was told by numerous key cutters that I would need to go through VW. The only one who said he could cut the key wanted more than VW. Our Polo has the ski slope cut on both faces while the T4 has the older traditional cut on the edge of the blade.
Understand how it works, troubleshoot logically BEFORE replacing parts.

forgot abt this thread. Year is 1996/7.
Good find still a lot cheaper than the dealer . I did for get to mention when we had ours done they were only copying the code not actually supplying the key itself so $90 is probably on the money .
$90 is fine by me.
