    T4 Ignition switch probs

Hi Guys ...finally got round to changing the ignition switch component that goes behind the ignition key barrell which was playing up.

Its just a remove and plug in the new one procedure.

However since having done the faulty part replacement .....now when I start the engine the headlights come on automatically and when I switch off the engine the lights wont go off unless I remove the key from the ignition.

    Anybody else encounter this?

And how did you fix the prob?

    Thanks.

Hmm, almost sounds like the light controller has been programmed for daytime running lights, but seeing as you've only just replaced the switch, then logic suggests there is either a fault in the switch itself (electrically, or the new one is "wired" for DRL), or you have managed to plug wires incorrectly/shorted something out.

Do the headlight stalk functions (high or low beam, flash on low beam) work normally ? That might give you some clues.

    T4's ignition prob..

Hi gregozedobe.....finally got round to checking with the local VW dealer and they tell me 1998 T4's don't have DRL mode.

Also all the headlight stalk functions work as required.

Guess I will have to keep looking???

If you are still keen to DIY, try (temporarily) putting the old ignition switch component back in to see what happens. If that fixes the headlight issue, look for differences in the contacts between the old and new bits. If it doesn't, I'd then look at the plug in connections you have disturbed.

With all due respect to the dealer that gave you that advice on DRLs, they may well be giving you accurate advice, but it is also possible that Oz market 1998 T4's don't have DRL mode activated (ie the electronic gizmos can do it, but aren't usually programmed to do so in our market).

I couldn't work out how to get at the screw that holds the switch in

    How did you do it?

(Don't tell me 'right angle screw driver' - I hate those things & don't own any Ha!)

sorry mate but the right angled screwdriver is the only way.

sounds like the new switch is faulty.
