I know you have said you have a 2.5ltr, what is the engine prefix? Unless it is a private import, a '98 should be an indirect injected, non turbo 2.4. The 2.5TDI was not sold in Aust. until 2000. The vagcom will only be suitable if yours is the TDI.
Hi all
My poor old van is not feeling 100%, sods law I let a mate borrow the van and I get a call from him telling me he broke down near Canberra. He was only meant to be going to North Sydney. Long story short he told me the van kept on dying on him, I told him call the NMRA and get it towed home and sort it out when he gets back.
I was fuming but the main thing was he and his missus who is pregnant where OK. The van started for me the next day no problems, its being going fun for the last 3 days. I have only used it for a couple of minutes mind you. Now there is a new problem since this happened when my mate took the van. A weird noise coming from either the timing belt or the auxiliary belt. I replaced the tension pulley and the auxiliary belt about 4 months ago and have only done about 1.500k max since then.
I did a bit investigating as I am freaked out about the timing belt snapping. So from what I can gather but I will confirm tomorrow it sounds as if the timing belt is rubbing off the timing belt cover. I took off the timing belt cover and saw this:
Look in the red circle and see where the belt has been rubbing off the cover, now I am 100% that the new squeaking noise is from this as about 8 months ago me and the missus where on our way back from Byron and the Auxilary belt pulley died a quick death and broke the timing belt cover and its being like that for ages and its never caused any dramas or weird noise. If I get a chance tomorrow I will remove the Auxilary belt and start the engine up and see if the squeaking noise goes away or if its stay there.
The motor is a 1998 2.5ltr t4 LWB.
Does any one know or have a timing belt cover for a 1998 2.5ltr t4, if any of you know of a wreckers which may have please drop me there contacts. The timing belt looks fine. I can slip on the auxiliary belt no problems but I am not going to touch the timing belt.
Could the timing belt be slightly lose can it be tightened!!!
I have vagcom which I bought from ebay but I have never used I will test it tomorrow, man it never ends!!!!

Yes we have one at the moment it has a large metal thing attached to it with five cylinders etc . What I am really saying is I do have one you can have it is on a spare 2.5 lt petrol engine sitting beside our house , we bought the engine complete with the view to transplanting it into my sons T4 which had a 2.4 diesel to cut a long story short we could not find some neccesary parts ecu etc so we gave up and ended up buying a whole van with a 2.5 in and did a complete swap . It looks like the cover was never installed properly. You can see where the water pump and timing belt have been rubbing on the cover.

I guess I spend too much time on UK sites where almost every topic is related to diesel.
It makes it difficult to help people if they won't accurately identify which engine they have. I have added up at least 8 different engines that were available in the T4 over the years without counting the various outputs.
