    T4 Dramas

So I had a clunking noise from my T4 for the last couple of weeks, which has not been getting any worse. I suspected a knackered engine mount.

Today it got worse and was getting bad to drive. I inspected and the engine has fallen down on the drivers side. However, the engine mount is fine, but the bolts that hold it to the block have ripped out and broken the piece off the side of the block that they need to bolt too! Arrrgh

Im faced with making up a bracket or swopping the motor. 2L van motors are a couple of grand at the wreckers. I`d really like a smashed TDI donor, but they seem scarse and expensive, so I could either bolt in an 8v 1.8 Golf engine, or a 16v.

I`m thinking 16v, but can it be made to run on the exising digifant fuel injection system? I have done some research and it seems that if I use an aftermarket fuel rail, I can use the digi throttlebody and injectors and just swop the lump. Maybe an ABF fuel rail will fit? Anyone have any thoughts on this, or shall I just put an 8v in it?

Tricky one that, Loon. I reckon that you should stick with the 2L 8v. They go alright and it would be a lot less mucking around. Buggers of things to work on I think at the best of times! Cheers, Andrew

It would be a big effort to run the 16V on digi unless you fitted an ABF complete.

Did you say the castings have broken on the block? I wonder if you could use some other adjacent bolt holes, there always seems to be loads spare, by making a steel bracket arrangement?

Just a though which may be a lot less affort.

1 for the 8v and one for the shonky bracket.

Trouble is I cant afford a new 2L block and it needs to be strong as I tow with it.

If it is possible then I'd go the bracket method for the medium term. It'll get you back on the track whilst you hunt down the best option for the long term. A decision on the fly whilst you are trying to do a job rapid like is often not the best choice.

Overall, go the bracket now and then get a weather eye out for a 1.9 or 2.5 Tdi. Have you checked with Brookvale Spares to see what they have that you could use (perhaps even afford!!)?

    Wise words from Seano.
Welded an extra piece to a cutdown Mk1 engine mount and made a fantasic bracket today.
Medium / long term fix. The search is on however.
Brooky dont have much I can afford $3000-4000 for a diesel engine, $2200 for a gearbox and no looms seems a bit steep.
Ill post up some pics of the mount once I have time.
Its not factory, but you cant see it and its damn strong.

Loose Bolts cause cracks in blocks

Mk1 Engine Mount, with the mount cut off and an extra piece welded on to connect to the other bolthole. Bit rough, but strong

    It works!!!!!

And you can`t see it with the cover on.

Made a resolve that if I ever need to take this engine out, a TDI is going in instead.
