    t4 auto mechanic brisbane

I have an 03 t4 transporter tdi 2.5. Love the machine. The auto is shuddering around 60 klms. i have had it to a good auto mechanic and he talked replacement but he has not has any experience with this box.

Can anyone recommend anyone in brisbane to take it to? I would prefer southeast(bayside) but would happily go anywhere if I new a guy was good.

    hang on a bit

dont rush out & throw heaps of cash at the auto what the shudder is is the lockup clutch trying to lock the tranny into top gear at low speed but there aint enouth pressure to hold the clutch in so it slips feels like you are running over delineators on the center line goes right through the van ,.
transmition stuff is horribly expensive I have changed trany oils & filters every 6K klm but the problem comes back after a few thousand K . now I just grab the gear shift & drag it into 3 till i am doing about 90 then back to drive & it snaps into O?D or lock up no worries .
I am gatering intrest on my money while I study the CDs workshop manuals & I am looking carefuly into what can be done & what valves may be at fault .
Gunna try the trany reset trick listed on this site see what if anything changes .

    T4 Auto

If anyone is considering doing the line pressure adjustment, be careful! While this may improve the feel of engagement in some gears, it also has an adverse effect on the 3/4 clutch by reducing the pressure to this clutch. The shudder experienced isn't necessarily a lack of applied pressure to the t/c clutch. The pressure maybe sufficient, however there is a nylon washer in the clutch which breaks down with heat/age. Once this washer breaks down there is additional clearance in the clutch, and the once 'sufficient' amount of pressure cannot apply the clutch, and hence you get the shudder.

There is a fix for this problem which involves replacing the nylon washer with a torrington type bearing. Unfortunately these trans get a really bad wrap for being fragile ( some of this may be due to lack of knowledge!). While they may not be the strongest around, with some basic improvements thay can be made to survive.

Regular servicing, a large trans cooler, and the t/c bearing should keep the trans in good shape. My van has all of the above mods & weighs 2400kg unladen & 90% of my driving is stop start inner city. I get the trans serviced every 12 months. I have just had it serviced and it came back with a clean bill of health, fluid not burnt, no fuzzies on the magnet.

It has been mentioned before on here, give A&B Reconditioners a go in Dandenong. They do a lot of warranty work for the Euro manufacturers, i.e VW Aust, Audi, BMW. When it come to t4 autos, they have them sorted.

    Hope this helps

P.s my van is also chipped and has a 2 1/2 inch exhaust just to get the lump moving!!

Thanks for the comments. Very much apprechiated. Just an update. interested.
Lawrence at German Autos doesnt do automatics - he suggested qld automatics just down the road.
qld autos seemed ok but at this stage I might take it to David at Trade Exchange Transmissions at Labrador.
He has a rebore kit( might be the wrong term) and he has done a t4 recently for about $4700 which is better than the usual $6k usually quoted. Seemed pretty professional and interested in the vdubs and uses a better oil cooler which makes sence. David was recommended by someone on the kombiclub forum and they were pretty happy.

I have given member jmac a call too and I am interested in what he can do.

Have to do something soon as I have a CV joint going(one next to the wheel) and I might as well do them while the box is out.

    tranny work in progress???

Happy new year to all just an up date on my T4 trany got the valve body recond & added a new oil cooler radiator to the trany dumped the water cooled heat exchanger bypassed the water & changed the oil & filter yet again sent it out to a local transmittion bloke who I trust as he answered all my questions straight up & we tested the van before I gave him the nod & got a good job @ a fair price $1 400.oo.
As you cant drain the torque converter I am about to do it all again before I take off towing the van the shudder comes & goes as the clutch in the converter is glazed up only a replacement will fix that but I can drive around that problem.
The valve body overhall has improved the boxes opperation & the Nulon Synthetic oil with a bottel of Smart blend 300ml additive is going in this week .
I have removed the breather from its pipe & now have 1mt clear plastic oil hose 1/2" od thatis a nice tight fit inside the breather tube & comes up to the coolant spheeer & zip tied in place as a filler all to easy .
New cooler takes out 15Deg C of heat the thing that kills these transmitions water temp is still 90C as usual goes to 100 c on real hard work on a 40c day .
cooler is mounted on the bull bar in the airstream with a bug screen on it so far so good.
I still lock the trany in the gear I know it needs form turbo boost pressure & road conditions just let the engine spin in its torque band & the lowest boost pressure to keep my econamy where i want it to be around 10Lt to the 100k with the van in tow no kruzeeee control thats my job .
one day I will try to post photos when I get it all worked out maybee this year .
