    T4 2.5ltr 1998 starting problem Part 2

    Hello all

Its been ages since I have been on here due to the fact my van has been running without any faults.
I took the family down from Perth to Margret River to see the the Margret River Pro surf comp and about half an hour from Margs the power steering went. I know the auxiliary belt (power steering, air con, alternator) had slips and pulled over after about 5 min of driving (looking for a suitable spot to stop. I usually had a spare belt and pulley tensioner in the van but just had the van, Just before we pulled over the van lost power and I was forced to pull over at the side of the road!!!!

I tried to start it again and it would not turn over. I waited for the Rac tow truck to bring us to the accommodation and deal with later.
I pulled the engine cover off and yes the pulley had shat itself and the belt was toast.

So two days later I managed to get new auxiliary belt and tensioner pulley and fitted, Now the van wont start.
It turns over ok, I jumped it to another car for testing purposed so battery was good.
    So far I have tested:
Fuel pump - tested and could see it pump fuel (new pump about 3 weeks ago)
Coil Pack and distributor cap - tested for spark on centre cable from coil to cap and have good spark, inspected cap and seems good.
Spark plugs seemed to be good condition and plug were wet.
I tried spraying starter fluid down the carbie and nothing it just wont start. as mentioned it turns over Ok but wont run.

My fear is the van is stuffed, possible issue with the timing belt slipping when the aux belt slipped, could be a timing issue.
Any other areas you would recommend me testing?

Its my work van so sort of stuffed without it, Love my T4 dont want to see her go down like this!!!

You mentioned that the van suddenly lost power before pulling over , just a slight chance how about swapping out the ECU relay , they are a known problem and will cause the van to shut down with no warning From memory its number 30 .Good luck I hope you get the old girl back up and working again they are a great van .

    Hi All

Van is still in the garage 5 days later. They just cant figure out what is wrong with it.
So far they have replace the Hall effect sensor as it was coming up as faulty.
The van wont start, they said it sparks but just wont turn fire up.
If the timing belt slipped could it cause the starting issue (damaged valves
There is no problem with Fuel as the plugs are wet, using starter fluid does nothing.
    Coils are fine.
We have fuel , spark and still wont start? If its the ecu, What could cause the ECU to fail?
    Any suggestions?

You may need to do a compression test.
Understand how it works, troubleshoot logically BEFORE replacing parts.

also need the spark at the right time!!

edit: you have tried for spark at an individual plug, not just the distributor, right?

    Hi Guys

    Just an update.
Good news well it turned out the aux belt when it slipped caused the timing belt to slip a couple of notches, luckily no damage to the valves etc.
Not going to use that vw garage again as it was me and another mechanic who figured it out.
    Anyways all good again.
