T4 2.0L Petrol - Coolant leak and something missing

Hi folks. I picked up a cheap '99 2.0L petrol T4. It has a coolant leak, so I've got a couple of questions.

See that puddle of green coolant in the photo. Any ideas where that's coming from? It looks like the heater hose goes in to the engine just above it, so maybe it's just a cracked hose, but before I go pulling things apart I thought I should ask the question. Maybe it's common for something else to break there that I should be looking at fixing? That area is directly above the spherical coolant expansion tank.

Also, directly above that there are two holes in the transfer case / bell housing that look like they should have something covering them / connected, through the holes I can see something spinning while the engine is running which I'm guessing is the fly wheel or something similar? Any ideas about those holes?

Some other questions, is it possible to remove the head on these engines without dropping the engine out of the vehicle? I'm concerned the head gasket might need replacing because there's a bit of moisture coming out of the oil filler when I take the lid off and there's moisture forming on the underside of the filler cap, but maybe this is related to the coolant leak over by those hoses.

Thanks for any help! Please point me to other threads if these or similar questions have been answered.
