I did end getting a response on Wednesday. They've stated that the turbo has failed and needs replacing at a cost of $7500 inc a new oil/air separator.
I nearly fell over at the price and then a myriad of questions spring to mind so I ask, which turbo is it? Why do I have to pay for both if it's only one turbo? Why are you replacing the oil/air separator? All questions unable to be answered without consultation with mechanic, I said leave it and I'll come speak to the service manager myself.
So far they've spent 2 hours on it and they've had the van for nearly 3 weeks and I've got more questions than they have answers.
The plan now is to ask for an explanation how they determined the turbo is at fault without removing it and get a compression test done as well as a report of any fault codes that are present. If it is the turbo I will take it and get it repaired/rebuilt myself.
I honestly don't understand how an oil leak from a turbo can cause the engine to over rev then make a clanging sound. To me it sounds more like a timing belt issue where a valve may have kissed a piston or two.
As for my reasons for coming from a Hiace they are as follows: Hiace was 17yrs old, basic as they come, I'd owned it for 8 years and now wanted something safer and more comfortable being newer and less prone to mechanical issues, well so I thought anyway. The Hiace served it's purpose well but with a new family I wanted something safer, more comfortable and more reliable.
