Rotational knocking in the right front end

Hey guys,

did some searching on older posts, but there were no difinitive answers, so heres hoping I can get an answer.

My July 2010 Multivan has done 62K's, and has developed a deep sounding knocking when driving over about 60 km/h. It seems to be coming from the drivers side under the hood. It stops when accelerating or when the brakes are applied, so generally when the car is coasting. Its also not so evident when the steering is turned slightly to the left...It is rotational and varies with the speed of the van.

Its currently in for checking but VW cant find the problem and want to keep the van for another day. I'm hoping the brains trust here can shed some light on what it might be. From what they tell me everything seems tight, calipers (brakes were done 2 months ago).

Maybe suspension strut? lower ball joint, steering ball joint?

driveshaft splines do go on these, even the newer ones

Yeah, stripping the output shaft hubs is common, but that usually results in a complete loss of drive, as the power is always transmitted to the wheel offering the least resistance.

Maybe the splines get slop in them before they go, and resultant noise while coasting?

I had a similar problem in my T5 that felt like I was driving over rumble strips, only happened to me when turning left at a certain angle at about 80km/hr. Turned out one of the drive shaft boots were split. Fitted new one, packed new grease in and as good as new.
