    Yeah, stripping the output shaft hubs is common, but that usually results in a complete loss of drive, as the power is always transmitted to the wheel offering the least resistance.

    Maybe the splines get slop in them before they go, and resultant noise while coasting?

    I had a similar problem in my T5 that felt like I was driving over rumble strips, only happened to me when turning left at a certain angle at about 80km/hr. Turned out one of the drive shaft boots were split. Fitted new one, packed new grease in and as good as new.
