Rim advice please. 17" or 18". New or used?

    Hi all,

Im a bit of a car newbie.

On eBay at the moment there are a couple of BMW X5 rims for sale. One set of 4 x 17" for $555 and an 18" set for $728.

I was reading a thread in here about 17" tyres being hard to find? Any issue with 18's? Any opinion on which size is better for the van ? (Transporter T5). I use it as a mobile office so it's basically empty in the back.

Part 2 of the question is do I need to worry about them being second hand? Not sure if ex wreck etc. Are there any new rims worth looking at for around the under the $1k Mark ?

Can I also easily add the VW center hub cap / stick on type pieces to the BMW tyres so they look VW branded ?

Whilst technically not legal Commodore wheels will fit I have a full set bought off Ebay they were off a Holden Crewman 1 tonner so I think they should be tough enough considering the crewman was a hulking great V8 powered beast . You will need some hub rings , also Koya make load rated wheels for the T5,s [have a set on our current T5]

Question was more around I have seen quite a few threads saying load rated rubber for 17" rims is hard to find with limited choices in the market. I was wondering if 18's had the same issue.

I doubt that a set of 255/45 R18 103W XL tyres would be any easier to find than a set of 235/55 R17 103W XL tyres.

I got ronal 17" wheels from performance alloys in the uk, a lot more choice and all correct load rating. Cost was around 1300 delivered in 4 days. They have plenty if 18" options too and it's a new wheelset.

17 inch is the most popular size from what has been reported lots of correct load rated tyres on the market Federal / Hankook just to name a few , Koya also make load rated wheels for the T5's as well . All available locally in Aus .
