removing upholstery on arm rest of captains seat

The vinyl on my arm rest has started to crack. I know a guy who can sew on new vinyl (might upgrade to leather), but I can't get the upholstery off to get just that part of the armrest to him.

Does anyone know how it comes apart?

Being a motor trimmer by trade you would think I would know but every car brand do them differently . Some times there is a small zip under the bottom edge or the back it may have a flap of material covering it just fold the flap back and you may see the zip . Some have a cap in the centre pivoting point which you can remove and the armrest will unbolt . Some are made in such a way that its sewn up with an overlapping section and they have to be peeled back like rolling a sock off your foot . Sorry I can't be more exact but I gave up the trade 14 years ago and have not seen how VW do theirs . Ok just had a look on the net from what I can see their is a plastic mould at the base with some screws going up into the padded part , remove those and the pad should come off . The cover may be glued onto the pad and may be difficult to remove without damaging the foam .

    Tornado,
In fact I live in Cheltenham, but the guy i use is Vlad, he has a very small workshop in a decrepit block of factories at 3/192 Chesterville Rd. His number is 9555 2172.
    He's always been very accommodating.
He used to do a lot of Rolls Royce and Austin Martin stuff years ago.

Thanks, we probably pass each other between work and home, lol. I live in Hampton and my factory is near Moorabbin airport.

As to your trimmer, will pass by, also have a wearing out side to my seat, must be all those eftpos receipts I carry in my wallet scraping the seat base . Often the best craftsmen have/had humble workplaces. Our first factory wouldn't fit my van and trailer today.
